Discriminatory press laws to be repealed: Sherry Rehman







KARACHI : Federal Minister for Information and Broadcasting, Sherry Rehman, Saturday said that the discriminatory laws against the media would be repealed. She was talking informally to the senior journalists at the Minister’s Camp Office here on Friday.
The Minister said that a beginning in this respect has been made with the tabling of a bill in the National Assembly for the amendment in the PEMRA Ordinance.
She pointed out that the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting is the mouthpiece of the government and it will not to impose any restrictions.
The Minister was of the view that the role of the Information Ministry should be that of a facilitator.
She said that she was in touch with the organizations of the journalists community as well as the APNS and the CPNE.
Sherry Rehman said that efforts would be made to evolve consensus regarding the press issues and problems.
She said the present government is committed to the freedom of the press.
With regard to the PEMRA bill, the Minister said that this a positive action and that this was our clear commitment with the press.
The Minister said that workshops and seminars would also be planned to help enhance the skills and capabilities especially of the young journalists.
She also exchanged views with the senior journalists on occasion.
