لاہور۔ پنجاب اسمبلی کے ٣٥٣ نو متنخب ارکان اسمبلی نے بدھ کے روز پنجاب اسمبلی کے افتتاحی اجلاس میں اجتماعی طور پر حلف اٹھایا ۔ پنجاب اسمبلی کے سابق سپیکر چوہدری محمد افضل ساہی نے نو منتخب ارکان اسمبلی سے حلف لیا۔ حلف برداری کے بعد سابق سپیکر چوہدری محمد افضل ساہی نے تمام نو منتخب ارکان پنجاب اسمبلی کو مبارکباد دیتے ہوئے امید ظاہر کی کہ ارکان اسمبلی عوام کے اعتماد پر پورا اتر یں گے اور یہ اسمبلی اپنی مدت پوری کرے گی ۔

لاہور۔ امیر جماعت اسلامی پاکستان قاضی حسین احمد نے کہاہے کہ ڈاکٹر شیر افگن نیازی اور ارباب غلام رحیم پر تشدد کے بعد آج کراچی میں ہونے والے ہنگامے ایک ہی سلسلے کی کڑیاں ہیں ۔اٹارنی جنرل پاکستان کی آج لندن میں الطاف حسین سے ملاقات کے فوری بعدکراچی میں فائرنگ ، آتشزنی اور وکلا پر تشدد کا سلسلہ شروع ہوجانا واضح کر رہاہے کہ یہ سب کچھ گہری منصوبہ بندی کے ساتھ ہو رہاہے ۔ پرویز مشرف اور اس کے اتحادی ملی بھگت سے ملک کے حالات خراب کرکے نئی حکومت کو ناکام بنانا اور ججوں کی بحالی روکنا چاہتے ہیں۔ جماعت اسلامی کا ڈاکٹر شیر افگن نیازی پر تشدد کے واقعے سے کوئی تعلق نہیں ہے۔ ہم ان کی حراست اور ان پر حملے کی شدید مذمت کرتے ہیں ۔ جماعت اسلامی پر الزام لگانے سے قبل انہیں تحقیق کر لینی چاہیے تھی ۔جھوٹی الزام تراشی سے وہ اپنا کیس کمزور کریں گے۔ منصورہ سے جاری کردہ اپنے بیان میں قاضی حسین احمد نے کراچی میں فائرنگ اور جلاؤ گھراؤ کی شدید مذمت کرتے ہوئے کہاکہ کراچی میں 12 مئی کا ری پلے ہو رہا ہے۔ وہاں بیسیوں مسلح لوگ دندناتے اور فائرنگ کرتے پھر رہے ہیں ، بے گناہ لوگوں کو تشد دکا نشانہ بنایا جارہاہے ، ملکی املاک اور گاڑیوں کو نذر آتش کیا جا رہاہے لیکن صوبائی اور شہری حکومت محض تماشائی بنی ہوئی ہے ۔انہوںنے کہاکہ ارباب غلام رحیم اور ڈاکٹر شیر افگن نیازی پر حملے اور کراچی میں خرابی ایک ہی سلسلے کی کڑیاں ہیں اور یہ لوگ ججوں کی بحالی اور ڈاکٹر عبدالقدیر خان کی رہائی کے مطالبے کو پس منظر میں دھکیلنا چاہتے ہیں۔ ہمارامطالبہ ہے کہ دونوں واقعات کی غیر جانبدارانہ اور شفاف تحقیق کرائی جائے اور سازشی عناصر کو بے نقاب کر کے انہیں قرار واقعی سزاد ی جائے ۔ انہوں نے کہاکہ سازشی عناصر وکلا تحریک کو بدنام کر کے ججوں کی بحالی میں رکاوٹ ڈالنا چاہتے ہیں اور نئی حکومت کے آغاز سفر سے پہلے ہی اس کی ناکامی اور حالات کو کنٹرول نہ کرسکنے کا تاثر دینا چاہتے ہیں۔ انہوں نے کہاکہ سیاستدان اور سیاسی ورکرز اپنے ماضی سے سبق سیکھیں اور ایک دوسرے کے خلاف بیان بازی اور الزام تراشی کے بجائے برداشت کا مظاہرہ کریں ۔ انہوں نے کہاکہ حکمران طبقے کو زیادہ احتیاط سے کام لینا چاہیے اور یہ تاثر نہیں دینا چاہیے کہ سیاستدان ملکی معاملات کو احسن طریقے سے سنبھال اور چلا نہیں سکتے ۔ قاضی حسین احمد نے کہاکہ چوہدری اعتزاز احسن اپنے استعفیٰ کے فیصلے پر نظر ثانی کریں اور وکلا کو آپس میں لڑا کر ججوں کی بحالی کی تحریک کو سبوتاژ کرنے کی سازش ناکام بنا ئیں ۔ انہوں نے کہاکہ اس تحریک کو منطقی انجام تک پہنچانے کے لیے وکلا برادری کا اتحاد ضروری ہے

مولانا فضل الرحمن کی نواز شریف سے ملاقات ، کراچی ہنگامے اور شیر افگن نیازی پر تشدد نئی حکومت کے خلاف سازش ہے ۔دونوں رہنماؤں کا ملاقات میں اظہار خیال

رائے ونڈ۔ سابق وزیراعظم نواز شریف اور مولانا فضل الرحمان کے درمیان ملاقات میں کراچی میں ہنگاموں اور ڈاکٹر شیر افگن پر تشدد کو نئی حکومت کے خلاف سازش قرار دیا گیا ہے۔جمعیت علمائے اسلام کے سربراہ مولانا فضل الرحمان نے رائے ونڈ میں مسلم لیگ ن کے قائد نواز شریف سے ملاقات کی جو ایک گھنٹہ سے زائد جاری رہی، اس موقع پر سابق وزیراعلیٰ سرحد اکرم درانی، مولانا امجد خان اور رکن پنجاب اسمبلی علی حیدر نور نیازی بھی موجود تھے۔ ملاقات میں نواز شریف نے کہا کہ عوام نے جو توقعات حکومت سے لگائی ہیں ان کو پورا کرنا ہو گا۔ مولانا فضل الرحمان نے کہا کہ قومی امور کے بارے پالیسی پارلیمنٹ میں طے ہونی چاہئے، ماضی میں جاری رکھا گیا ڈکٹیشن کا عمل نہیں دہرایا جانا چاہئیے۔ ملاقات میں کراچی میں ہنگاموں پر تشویش کا اظہار کرتے اس امر پر اتفاق ظاہر کیا گیا کہ سیاست میں تشدد اور کراچی میں فسادات نئی حکومت کے خلاف سازش ہیں جس کا سدباب ہونا چاہئیے۔

اسلام آباد ۔ حیلے بہانوں سے کسی کو معزول ججز کی بحالی میں رکاوٹ ڈالنے کی اجازت نہیں دی جائے گی۔ ہم کراچی میں ہونے والے واقع کی پر زور مذمت کرتے ہیں ۔ سندھ اسمبلی میںارباب غلام رحیم اور لاہور میں شیر افگن نیازی پر حملے کی شدید مذمت کرتے ہیں ۔ سوال پیدا ہوتا ہے کہ چیف جسٹس کی بحالی کے لئے نکالے گئے جلوس کو تیس منٹ میں آنسو گیس اور لاٹھی چارج سے منتشر کر دیا جاتا تھا یہاں چھ گھنٹے کس کے کہنے پر تماشا ہوا ۔ ان خیالات کا اظہار پاکستان تحریک انصاف کے چیئر مین عمران خان پارٹی کے سنٹرل سیکریٹریٹ میں میڈیا سیل سے گفتگو کرتے ہوئے کیا ۔ انہوں نے کہا کہ تحریک انصاف تشدد کی پالیسی کے خلاف ہے ۔ کراچی میں آتشردگی ، ہنگامہ آرائی ، فائرنگ جلاؤ گھیراؤ اور اس کے نتیجے میں دو ہلاکتوں کے علاوہ دیگر نقصان کو جتنی بھی مذمت کی جائے کم ہے ۔ شیر افگن نیازی ایک ضعیف شخص ہے انہیں وحشیانہ اند از میں تشدد کا نشانہ بنانے کے عمل کو کسی صورت سراہا نہیں جا سکتا ۔ ضرورت اس امر کی ہے کہ ان خفیہ ہاتھوں کو سامنے لایا جائے ۔ جنہوں نے لاہور میں ریاستی مشینری کے ہوتے ہوئے چھ گھنٹے تک قانون کی دھجیاں اڑائیں ۔ عمران خان نے کہا کہ اس ملک کو سب سے زیادہ نقصان صدر مشرف نے پہنچایا ۔ انہوں نے قانون شکنی کی انتہا کی ۔ منتخب حکومت پر شب خون مار کر اسے ختم کیا ۔ لال مسجد ، جامعہ حفصہ پر غارت گری کے حفاظ کرام بچے اور بچیاں فاسفورس سے جلا دیں ۔ وانا ، وزیر ستان ، بلوچستان میں فوجی آپریشن کیے گئے ہیں ۔ سوات میں پاکستانی فوج یاور عوام مروائے ۔ فوج اور عوام کے درمیان نفرت پیدا کی ۔ عمران خان نے کہا کہ آج پاکستان کا بچہ بچہ اس بات کی گواہی دے رہا ہے کہ پاکستان کی فاشسٹ پارٹی کو استعمال کر کے صدر مشرف اپنے ایجنڈے کی تکمیل چاہتے ہیں ۔ انہوں نے کہا کہ قوم اب جا گ چکی ہے ۔ میڈیا آزاد ہے اب کوئی شخص ٹوپی ڈرامہ کر کے پاکستانی عوام کی خواہشات کو قتل نہیں کر سکتا ۔ انہوں نے مزید کہا کہ پاکستان کے عوام گزشتہ دو دنوں سے جاری ڈرامے سے بخوبی آگاہ ہیں ۔ یہ سازش ایوان صدر میں تیار کی گئی ۔ آج کراچی میں ہونے والی دہشت گردی کی جتنی بھی مذمت کی جائے وہ کم ہے ۔ صدر مشرف 12مئی کو ایم کیو ایم کے ذریعے ہلاکتوں کا بازار گرم کیا اسی رات اسلام آباد میں قوم کو مکا دکھایا ۔ عمران خان نے کہا کہ ایم کیو ایم ایوان صدر ، ہاری ہوئی پارٹی اور وہ سیاسی لوگ جو اقتدار کے ایوانوں کو اپنی حتمی منزل سمجھتے ہیں انہوں نے اپنی قومی ذمہ داری کا احساس ہونا چاہیے ۔ صدر مشرف نے گزشتہ 9سالوں سے پاکستان میں جنگل کا قانون نافذ کر رکھا ہے ۔ انہوں نے زور دے کر کہا کہ قوم وکلاء کی تحریک کے ساتھ ہے ۔ انہوں نے وکلاء کمیونٹی مسے اظہار یکجہتی کرتے ہوئے کہا کہ وکلاء کو مشکل کی اس گھڑی اتفاق اور اتحاد کا مظاہرہ کرنا ہے ۔ انہوں نے واضح طور پر کہا کہ وکلاء شیر افگن پر حملے کے ذمہ دار نہیں ہیں البتہ ہم غیر جابندارانہ حلقوں سے واقعہ کی تحقیقات کا مطالبہ کرتے ہیں ۔ اس موقع پر تحریک انصاف کے ڈپٹی سیکریٹری اور انفارمیشن افتخار چوہدری ، سیکریٹری فنانس سردار اظہر طارق ، جائنٹ سیکریٹری کرنل یونس علی رضا اور جنرل سیکریٹری اسلام آباد اویس خالد بھی موجود تھے ۔

اسلام آباد ۔ وفاقی وزیر خزانہ اسحاق ڈار نے کابینہ کو شوکت عزیز حکومت کی ناقص اقتصادی پالیسیوں کے بارے میں وائٹ پیپر پیش کرتے ہوئے انکشاف کیا ہے کہ شوکت عزیز حکومت نے ترقی کے حوالے سے انتہائی غلط اعداد و شمار پیش کیے جبکہ حقیقت یہ ہے ملکی معیشت انتہائی نازک صورت حال سے دو چار ہے جی ڈی پی اور افراط زر کی شرح سمیت کوئی بھی معاشی ہدف حاصل نہیں ہو سکے گا نجکاری کا عمل شدید متاثر ہوا ہے اور بنکوں سے ہدف سے کئی گنا زیادہ قرضے لئے جاتے رہے وفاقی کابینہ کا اجلاس وزیر اعظم سید یوسف رضا گیلانی کی صدارت میں ہوا اجلاس میں وفاقی وزیر خزانہ محمد اسحاق ڈار نے 31 مارچ تک کی معاشی صور تحال کے بارے میں کابینہ کو آگاہ کیا اور کابینہ کو بتایا کہ ملکی معیشت تباہی کے دہانے پر ہے اور انتہائی انتظامی کا مظاہر ہ کیا گیا ہے اجلاس کے بعد وفاقی وزیر خزانہ اسحاق ڈار نے وزیر اطلاعات و نشریات شیری رحمان کے ہمراہ مشترکہ پریس کانفرنس سے خطاب کرتے ہوئے کہا کہ ہم نے قوم سے وعدہ کیا تھا کہ حکومت کے قیام کے پندرہ دنوں کے اندر اندر ملک کی موجودہ صورت حال کے بارے میں قوم کو آگاہ کیا جائے گا ہم نے یہ وعدہ آٹھ دنوں میں پورا کر دیا اور آج کابینہ کو ماضی کی حکومت کی غلط معاشی پالیسیوں کے باعث 31 مارچ تک کی معاشی صورت حال کے بارے میں بتایا انہو ںنے کہا کہ رواں مالی سال کے دوران جی ڈی پی کی شرح 7.2 فیصد کے مقررہ ہدف کے بجائے صرف چھ فیصد رہنے کی توقع ہے اس طرح افراط زر کی شرح ساڑھے چھ فیصد کے مقررہ ہدف کی بجائے 10 فیصد تک رہنے کی توقع ہے فیڈرل بورڈ آف ریونیو کا ہدف 1025 ارب روپے کی بجائے 990 ارب روپے رہنے کی توقع ہے مالیاتی خسارہ 4.5 فیصد کے مقررہ ہدف کی بجائے 9.5فیصد رہنے کی توقع ہے منی گروتھ 19 فیصد کے ریکارڈ سطح پر پہنچنے کی توقع ہے اس طرح جی ڈی پی میں کرنٹ اکاؤنٹ خسارے کی شرح 9.2 فیصد رہنے کی توقع ہے سٹیٹ بنک کے ذخائر کم ہو کر 13 ارب 70 کروڑ ڈالر تک رہنے کی توقع ہے جب کہ کریڈٹ ریٹنگ جو اس وقت B1/B+N ہے وہ بہتر ہو کر B2/B رہنے تک کر نے کی کوشش کی جائے گی انہو ںنے کہا کہ اس طرح مانیٹری پالیسی اور مالیاتی پالیسی کو بھی بہتر بنایا جائے گا اور غذائی اجناس میں افراط زر کی شرح 14 فیصد تک رہنے کی توقع ہے انہو ںنے کہا کہ شوکت عزیز کی حکومت نے دعوی کیا تھا کہ انہو ںنے کشکول توڑ دیا ہے مگر معیشت کی یہ صورت حال دیکھ کر پتہ چلتا ہے کہ انہوں نے کشکول توڑ کر دیگ رکھی ہوئی تھی یہی وجہ ہے کہ آزادی سے لے کر 1999 تک حکومت قرضوں کا حجم 2946 ارب روپے تھا جو رواں مالی سال کے آخر تک 5695 ارب روپے تک پہنچ جائے گا اس طرح گزشتہ آٹھ سالوں کے دوران حکومتی قرضوں میں 4810 ارب روپے کا اضافہ ریکارڈ کیا گیا انہو ںنے کہا کہ کابینہ نے اس بات پر حیرانگی کا اظہار کیا کہ باہر سے بھی امداد آتی رہی اس دوران قرضوں کی ادائیگی بھی نہیں کی گئی اس کے باوجود اتنی بڑی مقدار میں قرضے لئے گئے اسحاق ڈار نے مزید بتایا کہ حکومت نے غربت میں کمی کے حوالے سے غلط اعداد و شمار پیش کیے اور ان کے اعداد و شمار کے مطابق 1999 میں غربت کی شرح 30.9 فیصد تی جو 2004-05 میں 23.9 فیصد تک پہنچ گئی انہو ںنے کہا کہ حقیقت یہ ہے کہ ملک میں غربت کی شرح میں اضافہ ہوا اور لوگوں کی قوت خرید میں کمی واقع ہوئی آٹھ سال قبل ایک ڈالر میں 8 کلو آٹا ملتا تھا جو اب بمشکل3 کلو میسر آتا ہے انہو ںنے ایکسٹرنل نیٹ فنانسنگ کے حوالے سے کہا کہ شوکت عزیز کی حکومت نے اس میں بھی غلط اعداد و شمار پیش کیے نان بینکنگ فنانس کا ہدف 50 ارب روپے تھا جو اس وقت 75 ارب 40 کروڑ تک پہنچ ہے اور رواں مالی سال کے آخر تک 175 ارب روپے تک رہنے کی توقع ہے اس طرح بنکوں سے قرضے لینے کا ہدف 81 ارب روپے مقرر کیا گیا تھا جبکہ پہلے آٹھ ماہ کے دوران 295 ارب روپے تک پہنچ گیا ہے جو رواں مالی سال کے آخر تک 441 ارب روپے رہنے کی توقع ہے اس طرح نجکاری کے عمل سے 75 ارب روپے آنے کا ہدف مقرر کیا گیا تھا مگر اس میں کوئی پیش رفت نہ ہوئی اور پہلے آٹھ ماہ کے دوران ایک ارب 70 کروڑ روپے حاصل ہوئے جو رواں مالی سال کے آخر تک 2 ارب 10 کروڑ روپے رہنے کی توقع ہے اس طرح مجموعی طور پر 399 ارب روپے مختلف شعبوں سے قرضے لینے کا ہدف کیا گیا تھا جو اس وقت تک 453 ارب 70 کروڑ روپے کے قرضے لئے جا چکے ہیں اور رواں مالی سال کے آخر تک یہ شرح 872 ارب روپے رہنے کی توقع ہے انہو ںنے کہا کہ حکومتی قرضوں کے باعث ہی مہنگائی نے جنم لیا جس سے غریب عوام سخت متاثر ہوئی اور لوگوں کی قیمت خرید کم ہو گئی اسحاق ڈار نے کہا کہ رواں مالی سال کے لئے ترقی 4.8 فیصد مقرر کی گئی تھی جبکہ یہ شرح 3.8 رہنے کی توقع ہے اس طرح لارج سکیل مینو فیکچرز کی شرح 10.5 فیصد مقرر کی گئی تھی جو 7.5 فیصد رہنے کی توقع ہے اس طرح جی ڈی پی کی شرح 7.2 فیصد مقرر کی گئی تھی جو 6 فیصد تک رہنے کی توقع ہے انہو ںنے کہا کہ رواں مالی سال کے لئے فیڈرل بورڈ آف ریونیو کا ہدف 1025 ارب روپے مقرر کیا گیا تھا جبکہ یہ 990 ارب روپے تک رہنے کا امکان ہے انہو ںنے کہا کہ مالیاتی خسارہ جو 260 ارب روپے مقرر کیا گیا تھا مگر حکومت کی ناقص پالیسیوں کے باعث پہلے 8 ماہ کے دوران کی صورت حال یہ ہے کہ ساڑھے 465 ارب روپے تک یہ پہنچ چکا ہے ۔ انہوںنے کہا کہ موجودہ حکومت کے سامنے اس وقت سب سے بڑا چیلنج یہ ہے کہ ماضی کی حکومت نے غلط طریقہ کار اختیار کیا اور اپنی زیادہ توجہ موبائل فون اور بڑی بڑی گاڑیوں اور دیگر پرتعیش اشیاء پر دی اور پڑے پیمانے پر بد انتظامی مظاہرہ کیا انہو ںنے کہا کہ اگر ماضی کی حکومت معاملات ٹھیک طریقے سے چلاتی تو آج ہمیں یہ حالات نہ دیکھنے پڑتے انہو ںنے کہا کہ چونکہ اس وقت غذائی اجناس میں افراط زر کی شرح بلند ترین سطح پر جا رہی ہے اور عالمی سطح پر غذائی اجناس کی قیمتوں میں بھی اضافہ ہوا ہے اس لئے ہمیں زراعت کو بہتر بنانے کے لئے خصوصی توجہ دینا ہو گی اس کے ساتھ ساتھ ملک توانائی کے بحران کا شکار ہے کابینہ کے اجلاس میں وزیر اعظم نے کہا ہے کہ ملک کو توانائی کے بحران سے نکالنے کے لئے بہت جلد انرجی پالیسی کا اعلان کیا جائے گا انہوں نے کہا کہ سٹیٹ بنک سے قرضے لینے کی شرح کے رحجان میں کمی لانا ہو گی انہو ںنے کہا کہ تیل کی قیمتوں میں اضافہ صرف پاکستان کا مسئلہ نہیں صرف پوری دنیا کا مسئلہ ہے ورلڈ بینک کے اجلاس میں جا رہا ہے اور ہم وہاں یہ موقف پیش کریں گے کہ تیل کی قیمتیں صرف ملک کی معیشتیں متاثر ہو رہی ہیں اس لئے انہیں کنٹرول کر نے کے لئے کر دار ادا کیا جائے انہوں نے کہا کہ ہم نے ملک کے غریب طبقے کو بالخصوص ریلیف دینا ہے اور آئندہ مالی سال کا بجٹ غریبوں کے لئے بنانا ہے انہوںنے کہا کہ ہمیں ان چیلنجز کا مل کر مقابلہ کر نا ہے اور قوم کو وہی کچھ بتایا جائے گا اور وہ اصل صورت حال ہو گی انہو ںنے کہا کہ سابق حکومت کی ان غلط پالیسیوں اور اعداد و شمار غلط پیش کر نے کے حوالے سے اس بیلنس شیٹ کو پارلیمنٹ کو پیش کر نا ہے اور پھر پارلیمنٹ نے فیصلہ کر نا ہے کہ وہ سابق حکومت جس میں وزیر اعظم شوکت عزیز ، وزیر اعظم کے مشیر ڈاکٹر سلمان شاہ اور ان کی اقتصادی ٹیم کو طلب کرے اور ان سے پوچھا کہ انہوں نے اتنے بڑے پیمانے پر بے ضابطگیاں کیوں کیں اس موقع پر وزیر اطلاعات و نشریات شیری رحمان نے کہا کہ وزیر اعظم نے کابینہ کو گزشتہ ہفتے آرمی چیف کی جانب سے ملک کے بعض حصوں جن میں مختلف آپریشن کے حوالے سے دی گئی بریفنگ کے حوالے سے بتایا انہوںنے کہا کہ کابینہ کے اجلاس میں سابق وزیر اعلی سندھ ارباب غلام رحیم اور سابق وفاقی وزیر شیر افگن نیازی کے ساتھ پیش آنے والے واقعہ کی شدید مذمت کرتے ہوئے کہا کہ ابھی نئی جمہوری حکومت نے اپنے پاؤں جمائے نہیں کہ ان کے لئے مسائل پیدا کیے جا رہے ہیں انہو ںنے کہا کہ ان واقعات میں جو لوگ بھی ملوث ہوئے ان کے خلاف بلا تخصیص کا حکم دیا گیا ہے اور عوام کو پر امن رہنے کی اپیل کی گئی ہے انہو ںنے کہا کہ کراچی میں آج ہو نے والے واقعات پر بھی شدید رد عمل کا اظہار کیا گیا ہے اور وہاں کی انتظامیہ متحرک ہے اور ایک ڈی پی او کو غفلت برتنے پر معطل کر دیا گیا ہے انہو ںنے کہا کہ حکومت کے ابتدائی دنوں میں ہی کراچی میں جبر و سیاست شروع ہو گئی ہے انہو ںنے کہا کہ جمہوری حکومت اس ساری صورت حال پر قابو پائے گی اور اس طرح کے واقعات میں ملوث افراد کے خلاف سخت کاروائی کی جائے گی انہوں نے کہا کہ کابینہ نے پیمرا میں غیر ضروری قوانین کو منسوخ کر نے کی منظوری بھی دی ہے اور اس عزم کا اعادہ کیا ہے کہ میڈیا کی آزاد ی کو یقینی بنایا جائے گا اور پیمرا کو میڈیا دوست اور وزارت اطلاعات و نشریات کے ما تحت ادارہ بنایا جائے گا اس سلسلے میں تمام تر فیصلے میڈیا کو اعتماد میں لے کر کیے جائیں گے

China condemns Pelosi comments on torch relay

BEIJING - China on Wednesday sharply denounced comments by speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives Nancy Pelosi in support of anticipated protests at Wednesday’s Olympic torch relay in San Francisco.
Pelosi said on Tuesday that she commended those who were expected to protest along the torch’s route in San Francisco on Wednesday, saying they would be making a “significant statement that the Olympic ideals of peace and harmony should apply to all people, including those in Tibet and Darfur”.
In a statement on the Chinese Foreign Ministry’s Web site about Pelosi’s comments, ministry spokeswoman Jiang Yu called the torch relay in San Francisco, its only stop in the United States, a “grand occasion” between the two countries.
“For some members of the U.S. Congress to set aside the Olympic spirit and the principle that sports should not be politicised, and even to openly encourage interference with and harm to the San Francisco torch relay, completely lacks basic morals and conscience,” Jiang said.
“We advise those very few in the U.S. Congress (who are doing so) to immediately stop interfering with and bringing harm to the Olympics and the torch relay,” she said.

India, Pakistan to review peace process in May

ISLAMABAD - Indian Foreign Minister Pranab Mukherjee will visit Pakistan next month for a review of a four-year-old peace process between the two nuclear-armed neighbours, the Pakistani foreign ministry said on Wednesday.
Mukherjee’s May 21 visit will be the first by an Indian minister since the formation of a new government in Islamabad led by the Pakistan People’s Party of assassinated former prime minister Benazir Bhutto.
Foreign secretaries will meet on May 20 to prepare the ground for talks between Mukherjee and Pakistan’s new Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi, a brief statement from the ministry said.
Pakistan and India have fought three wars since gaining independence from Britain in 1947, and came close to a fourth in 2002.
A peace process was launched by Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf and then Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee in 2004.
While the relationship between the two countries has considerably improved, they have made little progress in resolving their territorial dispute over the Himalayan region of Kashmir.
The peace process was put on a slow track over the past year as Pakistan passed through a phase of intense political turmoil, culminating in the defeat of pro-Musharraf parties in a parliamentary election two months ago.
Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh last month offered to meet Pakistan’s new leaders “halfway” to put the past behind and build a new relationship based on cooperation and enduring peace.
“I would like to assure the newly elected leadership of Pakistan that we seek good relations with Pakistan,” Singh has told India’s parliament.

Mobs burn vehicles in Pakistan’s Karachi

KARACHI - Police fired into the air to disperse protesters who set fire to several vehicles on Wednesday in the centre of Karachi, Pakistan’s biggest city, local television showed.
The cause of the unrest was not immediately clear but it comes amid political tensions a day after pro-democracy lawyers beat up a former minister and ally of President Pervez Musharraf.
Television footage showed the blazing shells of about half a dozen vehicles littering one of the main roads in the teeming southern port city of 12 million people, bringing traffic to a halt.
Police opened fire in the air with automatic pistols to disperse the mob, the footage on Geo television showed. The channel reported unrest in several parts of Karachi.
Police were not immediately available to comment.
Musharraf’s allies were trounced in elections in February, bringing to power a hostile coalition government led by the party of assassinated opposition leader Benazir Bhutto.
Former parliamentary affairs minister Sher Afgan Niazi was beaten with shoes and fists by angry lawyers on Tuesday night in the eastern city of Lahore, prompting a strong condemnation by Musharraf.

Pakistan court acquits Zardari in murder case

KARACHI - A Pakistani court acquitted Asif Ali Zardari, widower of assassinated former prime minister Benazir Bhutto, in the murder of his estranged brother-in-law on Tuesday, his lawyer said.
Pakistani courts in recent weeks have quashed a raft of corruption charges against Zardari, raising speculation that he could contest a by-election as a step towards becoming prime minister.
But he has shown no current interest in a parliamentary seat and last month nominated a close aide to his deceased wife as prime minister.
The Sindh High Court gave the verdict on an application filed by Zardari, requesting exoneration from the murder of Murtaza Bhutto.
“We had filed a petition in the honorable court arguing that there were no evidence against Mr Zardari so the decision should be given in our favour” Shahadat Awan, Zardari’s lawyer, told Reuters.
Murtaza, Bhutto’s younger brother, was gunned down in 1996 in the southern city of Karachi while his sister was in power.
Zardari, who became the political successor to his wife after her death and led the Pakistan People’s Party to victory in Feb. 18 elections, was accused of conspiring to murder Murtaza. He has long denied the charge.
Zardari, who spent 11 years in jail awaiting trial, but was never convicted.
Bhutto also faced corruption cases which were dropped after her assassination in a gun and bomb attack on Dec. 27.

At least 7 die in Pakistan political violence

KARACHI - At least seven people were killed in clashes between supporters and opponents of President Pervez Musharraf in the southern city of Karachi on Wednesday, hospital officials said.
The violence is the first since a new government made up of Musharraf’s opponents was sworn in just over a week ago.
Television footage showed a policeman firing shots in the air to disperse angry mobs who were setting fire to cars and petrol pumps.
A Reuters reporter saw the bodies of two men who, according to hospital officials, had been killed in shooting. Five charred bodies were later recovered from an office building which was set on fire, police told Reuters.
“The violence erupted in various parts of the city and protesters set on fire several vehicles,” a senior police officer, Azhar Farooqui, told Reuters.
“The situation is tense but under control,” he said.
The violence broke out after anti-Musharraf lawyers clashed in court with his supporters.
The city has been tense since angry protesters assaulted Arbab Ghulam Rahim, a Musharraf supporter and former chief minister of Sindh, on Monday as he was coming out of provincial assembly in Karachi.
Another vocal supporter of Musharraf, former federal minister Sher Afghan Niazi, was thrashed by angry lawyers in the eastern city of Lahore on Tuesday.
“Shameful act”
Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM), a pro-Musharraf party which holds sway in Karachi and other cities of Sindh, blamed anti-Musharraf lawyers for violence.
“The (anti-Musharraf) lawyers beat Sher Afgan in Lahore and today they beat our lawyers who were holding a peaceful protest in Karachi. This is a shameful act,” Haider Abbas Rizvi, a senior MQM leader said.
But lawyers’ leaders rejected accusation.
“Everyone saw, even mediamen were there, that the MQM-backed lawyers stormed the bar building and ransacked our offices,” Naeem Qureshi, Secretary-General of Karachi Bar Association said.
“This is an attack on the campaign for the restoration of judiciary and democracy”
Lawyers have waged a campaign against Musharraf since he tried to dismiss Supreme Court Chief Justice Iftikhar Chaudhry, in March last year.
Musharraf has become increasingly isolated after a crushing defeat of his allies in Feb. 18 elections.
Last November Musharraf sacked Chaudhry and dozens of other judges when he imposed emergency rule for six weeks to pre-empt a ruling against legitimacy of his re-election in October while still remaining army chief.
The new coalition government, led by the Pakistan People’s Party of assassinated former prime minister Benazir Bhutto last month promised to reinstate the judges.
Chaudhry, and nine others were freed from house arrest late last month, with the new government waiting in the wings.

Rehman orders probe into Karachi violence

ISLAMABAD : Advisor to Prime Minister on Interior A. Rehman Malik Wednesday strongly condemned violence in Karachi and which resulted in loss of precious lives and property. The Advisor ordered the provincial government to conduct a thorough investigation into the incident and take strict action against the perpetrators.
He directed the provincial government to ensure peace in Karachi and protect the lives and property of people.
Rehman Malik condemned the incident and said that it was really shocking and the culprits would soon be brought to justice.

Bill to repeal discriminatory PEMRA laws to be presented in NA Thursday: Sherry

ISLAMABAD : Minister for Information and Broadcasting, Sherry Rehman Wednesday said the Federal Cabinet has accorded approval for repealing discriminatory PEMRA laws and a bill in this regard would be presented in the National Assembly session commencing Thursday. “Now the government would repeal all the discriminatory PEMRA laws to fulfill demand of the media and remove its all concerns,” she said.
In a joint press briefing with Finance Minister Ishaq Dar on second Federal Cabinet meeting chaired by Prime Minister, Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani, Sherry Rehman said PEMRA is a regulatory body to facilitate the electronic media which could be reconstituted to the satisfaction of all stakeholders.
She said the Finance Minister gave a detailed briefing to Cabinet about the financial situation, inflation and crisis of electricity, water and Atta.
Giving details about the meeting, she said the Prime Minister informed the Cabinet about important development including briefing by Chief of Army Staff on Swat and FATA situation.
The Minister said the Prime Minister also informed about the observance of 29th anniversary of Shaheed Zulfikar Ali Bhutto and paid tributes to the late leader for his sacrifices for the people, democracy and the country.
She said the Prime Minister condemned the manhandling of Arbab Ghulam Rahim and Dr. Sher Afgan and told the Cabinet that he has already ordered immediate investigation into the incidents and action against culprits.
She said the Prime Minister has also appealed to the people to remain peaceful and help the government in meeting the challenges facing the country.
The Minister also regretted Wednesday’s incidents of violence in Karachi and said according to reports seven persons have been killed in this violence.
“Some elements were trying to undermine the democratic process and all those involved would be taken to task irrespective of their political affiliations,” she added.
Answering a question, the Minister said the government would provide adequate protection even to opposition leaders and in this regard pointed out that the Prime Minister responded positively to the request of Arbab Ghulam Rahim by ordering provision of police cover to him.
Sherry Rehman told another questioner that the expenses of Prime Minister House have been reduced by 40 per cent and the Premier has asked all ministers to effect economy in their ministries.
She said Prime Minister asked all the Ministers to formulate strategy in accordance with his 100-day plan he announced during his first speech in the National Assembly to provide relief to the masses.

PM orders enquiry into Arbab, Afgan incidents

ISLAMABAD : Prime Minister Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani on Wednesday said an enquiry has been ordered into the incidents involving Arbab Ghulam Rahim and Dr Sher Afgan Khan Niazi. Chairing the cabinet meeting here at the PM Secretariat, the Prime Minister took strong note of the two incidents at Karachi and Lahore and said those responsible will not be spared. He directed that a report be submitted to him at the earliest.
The cabinet members also expressed their concern over the incidents.

President, PM condemn acts of rowdyism

ISLAMABAD : President Pervez Musharraf and Prime Minister Syed Yousaf Raza Gilani Wednesday strongly condemned the recent acts of rowdyism in Karachi and Lahore and vowed that on no account subversive elements would be allowed to disturb the peace. President Musharraf and Prime Minister Gilani said during a call by the Prime Minister on the President at the Aiwan-e-Sadr.
Noting the incidents involving former Chief Minister Arbab Ghulam Rahim and Former Federal Minister Dr. Sher Afgan Niazi who were assaulted and treated inhumanely, the two leaders stressed upon the need for developing an atmosphere of tolerance and understanding of differing points of view.
They termed the incidents “ totally unacceptable” and directed the concerned authorities to carry out an immediate investigation to identify and ascertain those responsible so that they may be brought to justice.
The President and Prime Minister said that such acts of hooliganism were designed to vitiate the unprecedented cooperation and spirit of accommodation by political parties on all sides of the spectrum.
The two leaders welcomed political reconciliation in the country and said the people of Pakistan wish to see the country move forward on the path to progress as the solution of their problems lay in peace and harmony.
The president and the prime minister resolved that on no account would subversive elements be allowed to disturb this atmosphere.
During the course of the meeting, the President’s forthcoming visit to China, the Boao Summit, measures to eradicate extremism and terrorism, prevailing political situation in the country and other matters of national importance came under discussion.
The Prime Minister also discussed at length with the President various steps initiated by the government for improving the socio-economic conditions and welfare of the people.

Musharraf shocked over Karachi violence; urges people for calm

ISLAMABAD : President Pervez Musharraf has expressed shock over the incidents of violence in Karachi in which precious lives were lost, innocent people injured and property damaged.
The President directed the concerned authorities to take all necessary measures to ensure peace and calm, and bring the perpetrators and disruptive elements to justice.
He also appealed to the people to cooperate with the law enforcement personnel in ensuring peace and tranquillity in the provincial metropolis.

Karachi violence casualties rise to 7

KARACHI : The number of casualties in Karachi in the aftermath of violent disturbances rose to seven with the recovery of five burnt bodies from Tahir Plaza near City Court here on Wednesday.
One person died of bullet shot in Civil Hospital while body of a wagon driver was found in Burns road area.
Cheepa Ambulances soures said that five burnt bodies were found from the building housing the offices of lawyers and was set ablaze by unknown persons.

The new chief minister of Balochistan also condemned manhandling of Dr. Sher Afgan in Lahore. Nine nomination papers for Nawab Aslam Raeesani were filed in Balochistan Assembly yesterday. The nominations were submitted by the National Party parliamentarian Sardar Sanaullah Zehri, PPP’s Sadiq Umrani, Muslim League-Q like-minded group’s Asim Kurd, Hamal Kalmati, Jaffar Mandokhel and Saleem Khosa, JUI-F Maulana Abdul Wasay, Awami National Party’s Zamrak Khan and Syed Ahsan Shah of Balochistan National Party (Awami).No other candidate challenged Raeesani and he was declared elected unopposed for the top slot.

Why Muslim media has to look at the big picture

AS SOMEONE who studies the phenomenon of political Islam, I have, understandably, been reading much of the international Muslim Press over the past few years. In particular I have focused on the International Islamist media — and by this I am referring to the newspapers, web sites, journals and magazines produced by the many Islamist organisations, NGOs, political parties and social movements all over the world.
One factor that comes to mind immediately is how parochial and narrow the worldview of much of the international Islamist media has become. More often than not the reportage of world affairs, particularly by Islamist media in the non-Arab world, is focused more on the goings-on in Muslim societies and Arab-Muslim societies in particular. Reading through the material produced by the Islamist media in Pakistan, Malaysia and Indonesia for instance one learns more about the developments in Egypt, Turkey, Morocco, the Gulf states and Iran than anywhere else.
This does not mean to imply that the developments in these countries are not important, or that they are of no relevance to the development of Islamist movements in Asia or Africa or even Europe. But one does wonder how Islamists in Asia view the rest of the planet, and whether they realise that so much else is going on beyond the narrow frontiers of the Muslim world.
More troubling is that the view of the West is often shaped by the Islamist lens that they wear, and here again the ethnocentric and religio-centric biases of the Islamist Press stands out in bold relief. We are all well acquainted by now with the controversy over the recently-released film Fitna by the Dutch politician Geert Wilders. But how many Islamist papers reported the fact that during the protests against the recent Gulf War more than half a million Berliners came out into the streets of Berlin to protest against the invasion of Iraq? And what about the other civil-society led demonstrations organised in London, Paris, Madrid, Rome, Barcelona?
But perhaps the most troublesome thing about the Islamist media today is the impression it gives of being primarily and solely concerned with the affairs of the Muslim world alone; to the point where the overwhelming majority of the rest of the human race remains neglected and their stories remain untold. Yet if we were to look at the developments in the world since 11 September 2001 it should be clear to us all by now that many of the major geo-political shifts we have seen reflect and mirror many of the developments that we also see in the Muslim world.
Two examples stand out:
The first has to do with the latest scramble to re-colonise Africa in no uncertain terms. If we were to cast our minds back to the late 1990s, some of us may recall that it was even trendy in some Western technocratic circles to mumble the mantra of ‘saving Africa from itself’. Since the publication of Basil Davidson’s ‘The Black Man’s Burden: Africa and the Curse of the Nation-state’ (1993) there was much spurious talk of how post-colonial Africa was a disaster zone and that the nation-state model was not applicable there. The subtext of this constant attack on the performance of the nation-states of Africa (which did not come from Davidson, though) was that Africans were not able to govern themselves and were not culturally or essentially adapted to modern modes of governance. The other subtext was that if Africans could not govern themselves then perhaps the time has come for a new mode of colonialism that would rescue Africa (and by extension Africans) from themselves.
Today what we see is the rush to gather and monopolise the oil and gas fields of Africa in the most blatant manner. Already American, European and Chinese companies are all over the continent, cutting deals with corrupt African despots in order to secure the gas and oil resources of countries like Sierra Leone and Guinea.
Yet why isn’t any of this being reported in the Islamist Press? Surely the parallels with the developments in many Muslim countries, that are likewise hostage to the oil industry, are clear? Or is it because many Islamist intellectuals and journalists still think that Africans are not important to deserve such reporting because many parts of Africa (like Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania) are not Muslim?
Another striking example that comes to mind is the politics of Central and Latin America, that has gone unrecorded and unrecognised for so long. Venezuela for instance has been threatened with numerous embargoes, has experienced several attempts at toppling its government and has been cast as a Pariah state by the American government.
Yet the country’s President Hugo Chavez has been attempting nothing more than an economic reform project aimed at giving the Venezuelan economy back to its people, complete with land reforms and nationalisation of key industries as was the case in Egypt during the time of Gammel Abdel Nasr. Surely it should strike many of us as obvious that this is a case of history repeating itself, and the parallels with developments in the Muslim world; from Egypt under Nasr to Iran under Mosaddeq, are obvious too. And surely there is so much that Muslims can learn today by looking at the Venezuelan struggle against hegemony and comparing that to their own geo-political plight under present circumstances. But again, Venezuela seems entirely off the map for the international Islamist Press. Why? Is it because Hugo Chavez and the people of Venezuela are not Muslims?
One cannot help but come to such conclusions when the contradictions and blind-spots seem so painfully obvious. But if prejudice and ignorance of the world of the other is the only thing that is stopping Muslims from looking beyond the frontiers of their own community, then perhaps the time has come for them to seriously ask themselves what it means to be Muslim in the first place. Surely one of the principle tenets of Islam is the notion of Tauhid — the unitary nature of God and creation — which reminds us of the fundamental unity we share with the entire human race. The editors, writers and journalists who serve the machinery of the international Islamist Press should therefore get their respective acts together and begin to look closer at the rest of the world around them. If they do so, they may realise that Muslims today have more in common with their struggling brothers and sisters in Venezuela, Cuba and the African nations that with the rich elite of their own countries.

Bush gets an earful from Afghan governors

WASHINGTON - Eight Afghan governors met Tuesday with US President George W. Bush to tell him a few unpleasant truths about the plight of their country as coalition forces fight terrorists and the Taliban.
While grateful for the overthrow of the Taliban regime and the changes taking place since 2001, the governors complained about the slow pace of progress and how it was serving militants’ interests, and about the “excesses” of coalition forces.
The eight visitors poured out their feelings in a very civil, one-hour dialogue with Bush, who is a former governor of Texas, and before a group of reporters, including AFP, at the White House.
Asadullah Hamdam, Governor of Oruzgan province, was first to raise the thorny issue of indiscriminate arrests by coalition troops.
Bush, attempting to soften the moment by appealing to their shared experience as governors, told the group that he understood.
“They come and complain to you,” he said, remembering his years as Texas governor (1995-2000).
But seeing his Afghan guests’ serious demeanor, Bush added haltingly: “When somebody gets arrested that shouldn’t have been arrested you file a complaint obviously ...”
“First, we don’t even know who is arrested,” answered Asadullah Hamdan in his native language.
“If I just may,” Khost Governor Arsala Jamal politely cut in. “I think the issue is greater than that: we have 640 detainees in Bagram and like the governor said, all the governors are facing this problem.”
“Special operations is the biggest, biggest challenge and (it has a) negative impact on the people’s mind in regard to coalition forces. There is no single bigger issue than that,” Jamal added.
The governor complained about the restricted access Afghans had to Afghanistan’s Bagram prison, where hundreds of suspected terrorists are held by US forces under controversial conditions.
Jamal told Bush about the nightmare people arrested without charge face, and became downcast when Bush apparently failed to understand his suggestion that some operations were best carried out by Afghan rather than coalition forces.
“I got you,” Bush repeated several times.
The danger of alienation between US and NATO troops and the local population is another unsettling aspect of the Afghan conflict, as the struggle against the Taliban and Al-Qaeda continues unabated six years after coalition forces first landed.
The bombings that kill dozens of civilians at a time also take a heavy toll among coalition troops.
With less than 10 months before he leaves the White House, Bush is striving for a successful mission in Afghanistan, lest a failure reflect poorly on his legacy.
With the presidential campaign in full swing, Bush is accused by Democratic contenders Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama of ignoring Afghanistan for the sake of another highly controversial struggle, the “war on terror” in Iraq.
Bush last week returned from a North Atlantic Treaty Organization summit in Bucharest with a promise from US allies that they will boost their troop contingents in Afghanistan.
But the US president also stressed the need for economic and political progress in the country.
And so, Bush eagerly questioned his eight guests on how the police force in Afghanistan was doing and on the results of the mixed, civilian-military Provincial Reconstruction Teams he holds so dear and which the governors praised for rebuilding their nation.
The governors also talked at length about the reigning insecurity and unemployment in their country, and the problems neighboring Pakistan poses.
“It’s hard work in Afghanistan, but I told these leaders that I think it’s necessary work,” Bush told reporters before escorting his guests to the Oval Office for a head-of-state reception.

4 Taleban, 1 policeman killed in clash

KANDAHAR, Afghanistan - Taleban militants ambushed a police patrol in southern Afghanistan, and an ensuing battle killed four militants and a police officer, a provincial police chief said on Wednesday.
The clash occurred late Tuesday in Marja district of Helmand province as the officers were on patrol, said Helmand’s police chief, Mohammad Hussein Andiwal.
Four Taliban fighters and a police officer were killed in the clash, Andiwal said. Authorities recovered the militants’ bodies and their weapons, he said.
Two other officers were wounded and a police vehicle was damaged, he said.
Helmand province is the world’s largest opium poppy-producing region and a center of Taliban-led insurgency.
Last year was the deadliest in Afghanistan since the U.S.-led invasion that toppled the Taleban in late 2001. Over 8,000 people, mostly militants, were killed, the U.N. says.

President Musharraf calls Chinese entrepreneurs to invest more in Pakistan

BEIJING : President Pervez Musharraf lauded China’s assistance on mega projects in Pakistan and said his government encourages Chinese entrepreneurs to invest more in his country to achieve win-win results. President Musharraf said this in an interview to Xinhua news agency ahead of his upcoming state visit to China from April 10 to 15. He appreciated China’s assistance on mega projects, including the Karakoram Highway, a link between Pakistan and China which is under expansion, and the Gwadar Port.
The President asked for more Chinese entrepreneurs to invest in his country to achieve win-win results.
“There is a big market, then we have created an investor- friendly environment here in Pakistan where any investor gets a lot of benefits, advantages and has a scope to make money,” he said.
President Musharraf said that Pakistan has also created special industrial zones in the Gwadar Port and other areas which are favorable for Chinese investors.
He said that the two countries also have close cooperation in fighting terrorism, adding that Pakistan would give full support to China’s action against the “Eastern Turkistan” terrorist group.
“In the future, I see very bright and very strong relations,” Musharraf said.
He said that Pakistan-China relationship is broad-based and it would witness further development in the future.
President Musharraf spoke highly of the all-weather and time-tested friendship between Pakistan and China, saying that “the base for this relationship is broad, not uni-focused”.
Besides strong diplomatic relations between the two countries, Musharraf said, Pakistan and China have also maintained good cooperation education, defense production, trade and international affairs.

The newly elected Chief Minister will take oath of his office here Wednesday evening and he will seek vote of confidence from the assembly on Thursday.

Widespread protests in Mianwali; lawyers’ body anounce complete boycott

MIANWALI: The District Police Officer (DPO) Malik Abdul Aziz Wednesday said that the reaction in the city triggered by the torture incident of Dr Sher Afgan Niazi in Lahore last night was natural as a large number of people of his “biradari” are residents here. Talking to media he said the police have refrained from hard resistance to prevent loss of life and property.
Widescale protests here in the city in reaction to torture incident of Dr Sher Afgan Niazi in Lahore last night became violent late Tuesday as the bar room building and lawyers’ chambers at district courts were torched by a an enraged mob. Eye witnesses said as many as 14 chmbers of lawyers were gutted completely.
The DPO said that 2 DSPs had been already deputed at the courts who helped the authorities in controlling the fire and preventing injury or life loss.
According to APP district correspondent, large processions were seen in
the city and in its aftermath main roads of the city conencting Sargodha, Multan,
Rawalpindi and Mianwali- Bannu were closed to all kinds of traffic today.
Complying with the strike call of traders’ bodies as well as president district bar, all the business centres, retail markets, shops as well as schools and colleges remained closed and the protestors took to the streets today.
A number of people said to belong to the ‘biradari’ of Dr Sher Afghan, and his supporters, rallied across the city and burnt tyres along their way.
However,local police force despite its heavy presence preferred to observe the incidents without major intervention.
A number of citizens have expressed concern over the tense situation in the city, which is mourning the sad incident concerning Dr Niazi.
Meanwhile, an emergency meeting of the bar association here led by its president Sultan Sikander Khan has decided to lodge an FIR against 35 miscreants who set to fire their chambers and bar building. Lawyers said they had already indentified most of the persons involved.
The lawyers decided to boycott courts till the arrests of the miscreants involved in the fire incident.

President to discuss bilateral, defence ties with Chinese leaders

ISLAMABAD : President Pervez Musharraf will leave on a six-day state visit to China starting from Thursday to discuss bilateral relations, regional and international issues besides talks to further strengthen defence cooperation.
The visit, from April 10 to 15, at the invitation of Chinese President Hu Jintao has been termed as part of regular high-level interaction between the two countries; reflective of close bilateral ties, by the Foreign Office.
“The President’s visit will reinforce the all-weather, time-tested friendship between the two countries and further enhance and deepen our strategic cooperative partnership,” Foreign Office spokesman Mohammad Sadiq.
President Pervez Musharraf during the visit, will hold talks with President Hu Jintao in Sanya, and separate meetings in Beijing with Premier Wen Jiabao and other Chinese state leaders.
The President and the Chinese leadership will review the entire gamut of Pak-China bilateral relations besides discussing regional issues and international developments.
The President will also be the keynote speaker at BOAO Forum for Asia.
The theme for this year is “GREEN ASIA: Moving Towards Win-Win Through Changes”. The President will meet other world leaders attending the BOAO Forum.
President will visit Urumqi, the capital of the Muslim majority Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region of China and meet with Xinjiang leadership at the last leg of his visit.
China is a major source of investment, trade and defence for Pakistan. Bilateral trade between the two countries has touched US 6.5 billion dollars. Pakistan and China signed a free trade pact in 2006 and hope to raise two-way trade to $15 billion within the next five years.
The President will be accompanied by Minister for Foreign Affairs Shah Mehmood Qureshi and Minister for Defence Ch. Ahmed Mukhtar.
On Monday, a Shanghai shipyard launched the first of four F-22P frigates to be delivered to Pakistan. The fourth and last vessel will be completed at a Karachi shipyard in 2013.
The Pakistan Air Force has inducted into its fleet a fighter aircraft, called JF-17 Thunder, that is co-produced with China.
Pakistan was the first Islamic country to recognise People’s Republic of China on 4 January 1950. Diplomatic relations were established between the two countries on 21 May 1951.
The multi-faceted relations between Pakistan and China are built on commonality of interests in peace, security and development of the region, spokesman Mohammad Sadiq said.

Lahore incident conspiracy against democratic government: Zardari

ISLAMABAD : Co-chairman of Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP), senator Asif Ali Zardari has strongly condemned the roughing up of former minister Dr. Sher Afgan Niazi by some elements masquerading as lawyers. “The incident was shocking beyond measure and is condemned in the strongest terms”, Mr Zardari said in a statement.
It was intriguing that the incident occurred when the new coalition government was about to take over administration in Punjab province, he added.
Zardari said it needs to be investigated why the law enforcing agencies watched the gory incident silently and did not take timely action to rescue Sher Afgan Niazi from captors.
A day before in Karachi former Chief Minister Arbab Ghulam Rahim was manhandled just when the new government was about to take over the administration in the province.
The PPP believes in the rule of law and is deeply concerned that some elements in Karachi and Lahore have tried to take law into their hands.
“The two incidents appear to have been engineered by elements that want to bring a bad name to the new democratic governments even before their installation in the provinces,” he said.
The PPP co-chairman expressed the hope that the government will hold a thorough probe into the incident and expose the hidden hands behind the plot and also punish them in accordance with the law.

PM orders enquiry into Arbab, Afgan incidents

ISLAMABAD : Prime Minister Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani on Wednesday said an enquiry has been ordered into the incidents involving Arbab Ghulam Rahim and Dr Sher Afgan Khan Niazi. Chairing the cabinet meeting here at the PM Secretariat, the Prime Minister took strong note of the two incidents at Karachi and Lahore and said those responsible will not be spared. He directed that a report be submitted to him at the earliest.
The cabinet members also expressed their concern over the incidents.

Arrest warrants for 34 cops

LAHORE - Two additional district and sessions judges ordered confiscation of salaries of 37 cops including four SHOs and 10 sub-inspectors for not complying with court orders in different under trial cases on Monday.
The courts also issued non-bailable arrest warrants for 34 police officials and directed the authorities concerned to arrest and produce them in the court in handcuffs at the next hearing.
AD&SJ Ibrahim Asghar issued non-bailable arrest warrants for SHO Naulakha for not complying with court orders in two different under-trial Hudood cases.

350 Punjab MPAs will take oath today

LAHORE - Transition to democracy in Pakistan will be completed today when more than 350 newly-elected members of the Punjab Assembly would take oath of office at a ceremony to be held at the Punjab Assembly Secretariat under stringent security.
With the completion of the ritual, stage will be set for the PML-N-led coalition to take over the government of which the PPP will be another partner. Speaker of the previous assembly Chaudhry Mohammed Afzal Sahi would administer oath to the new members. After the oath, the candidates would file nomination papers for the positions of PA Speaker and Deputy Speaker and the election would be held on April 11.
Rana Mohammed Iqbal Khan and Sardar Shaukat Hussain Mazari are candidates for PA Speakers and Deputy Speaker posts respectively. The PML-Q has nominated Mohsin Leghari as its candidate for speaker, however, the name for deputy speaker is yet to be made public.
The PML-Q knows that its candidate stands no chance but it doesn’t want the post go uncontested. Former governor Zulfiqar Khosa’s son - Dost Mohammed - is the PML-N candidate for chief minister.
He will hold the position till Shahbaz Sharif gets himself elected in a by-election to be held in May. Once the PML-N president makes it to the Punjab Assembly, he will take over as the provincial chief executive.
The PML-N and the PPP are holding their parliamentary parties' meetings to decide ministers for the new cabinet. It has already been decided that the number of ministries would not be more than 35.Twenty-two ministers would come from the PML-N while the remaining 13 would be contributed by the PPP. Raja Riaz of Faisalabad will be the senior minister.

No negotiations with terrorists, says FM

ISLAMABAD - The new coalition government will not negotiate with "terrorists" even as it seeks talks with some militant groups, Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi has said.
"We will not negotiate with terrorists, but we will engage (them in dialogue) and we believe in political engagement," Qureshi told Dawn News television in an interview.
He said the new government would adopt a multi-pronged strategy to combat terrorism, as military force alone was not the only solution. He said the PPP-led coalition government would engage the local population "politically".
The foreign minister said that it was a wrong perception that Pakistan was fighting the US 'war on terror', adding that terrorism was affecting Pakistan's people and the economy. He said the new government would convince the people that the 'war on terror' was in Pakistan's best interest.
Qureshi also called for softening the detention of Abdul Qadeer Khan, the Pakistani nuclear scientist put under arrest by President Pervez Musharraf.
He said he didn't want Khan's movements "restricted".
He said Khan was a "respected Pakistani" who should be allowed to go out if he wished. He also said that Dr Khan would not be handed over to the International Atomic Energy Agency.
On the Kashmir issue, Qureshi said that the government would not put it on the backburner, as it was also on the agenda of the composite dialogue with India.
AP adds: Qureshi said a meeting with visiting British Home Secretary Jacqui Smith on Monday was "very productive.”
"On a lot of issues we’re on the same page,” he said. Jacqui said she was sure the new administration "wants to do more” against terrorism. She said London will urgently consider ways to boost bilateral cooperation, saying it already has helped prevent several terrorist attacks in Britain.
In a separate meeting, Gilani told Jacqui that Pakistan would follow a "multi-pronged” strategy against terrorism and extremism, his office said in a statement. Gilani urged the international community to address root causes of terrorism in "unresolved political issues” and economic disparities.
He welcomed British development funds earmarked for tribal areas along the Afghan border.
Qureshi accused the previous government of failing to convince Pakistanis "that this is not an alien war,” despite a wave of suicide bombings and their negative impact on the economy.

Iran risks more sanctions: White House

WASHINGTON - The White House on Tuesday warned Iran it risked further isolation and new international sanctions after refusing to comply with UN Security Council resolutions over its disputed nuclear program.
White House spokesman Gordon Johndroe said he could not verify the accuracy of Iran’s statement that it had started work to install 6,000 new centrifuges to enrich uranium at its main nuclear plan in Natanz.
But he said it was not surprising.
“The Iranian government continues to be in violation of multiple United Nations Security Council resolutions and with each step it takes it continues to isolate its people and risk further international financial and diplomatic sanctions,” he said.
The announcement came as Iran marked its “national day of nuclear technology” on the second anniversary of its first production of uranium sufficiently enriched to make atomic fuel.
Iran has already installed around 3,000 P1 centrifuges at an underground enrichment facility at Natanz, in central Iran, according to the latest report by the UN nuclear watchdog, and tripling this number would mark a major expansion of its nuclear capacities.
The West fears Iran could use enriched uranium to make a nuclear weapon, and Tehran’s refusal to suspend the process has been punished with three sets of UN Security Council sanctions and US pressure on its banking system.
Despite Iran’s latest defiance, White House press secretary Dana Perino said global pressure has had an impact on the Islamic regime.
“We do know that it does have an impact when we speak with one voice in the international community to put sanctions on a country like Iran,” she told reporters.
“What we have decided to do as a community, as an international community is continue to keep that pressure on,” she said.
The message to Iran’s government, she said, is “that we have a huge problem with them not being fully transparent with what they want to do with this enrichment.”

کراچی……وکلاء تحریک کے راہنما اور سپریم کورٹ بار کے صدر چوہدی اعتزاز احسن نے کہا ہے کہ وہ کسی صور ت استعفیٰ واپس نہیں لینگے۔ جیو نیوز سے بات کرتے ہوئے انہوں نے کہا کہ انکے استعفیٰ کا یہ مطلب نہیں لیا جائے کہ وہ وکلاء تحریک سے الگ ہو رہے ہیں۔ انہوں نے کہا کہ وکلاء تحریک ایک مقدس مقصد کیلئے ہے اور وہ کسی صورت اس تحریک سے علیحدگی برداشت نہیں کرینگے۔ انہوں نے کہا کہ کچھ کالی بھیڑیں اور ایجنسیوں کے لوگ اس واقعہ کے ذمہ دار ہیں تاہم وکلا کو اس سے بری الذمہ قرار نہیں دیا جا سکتا۔ انہوں نے کہا کہ ڈاکٹر شیر افگن نیازی اور ارباب رحیم کے ساتھ جو کچھ ہواوہ سب بہت غلط ہے ۔انہوں نے کہا کہ منفی ایک کا فارمولا صدر پرویز مشرف پر لاگو ہونا چاہئیے اور وہ یقین سے کہ سکتے ہیں کہ صدر کے چلے جانے سے ملک میں جاری تمام گڑ بڑ کے واقعات ختم ہو جائینگے۔

Sunny Deol’s The Man, in which she will play a role very close to her real life experience last year, and Uru Patel’s international flick Hanuman, featuring her in the role of Goddess Sita, with Hollywood actor Keanu Reeves being tipped to play Lord Ram.
