LAHORE: Punjab Assembly approved the annual provincial budget 2008-09 by allocating grants under a total of 41 heads including seven pertaining to development. Though opposition members of PML-Q moved 32 cut motions on various sectors but did not pursue them during the session because they were out of the house in boycott. Acting Speaker Rana Mashhood Ahmed Khan chaired the session, while Finance Minister Tanvir Ashraf Kaira moved the demands for grants in the budget 2008-09, which were passed by the house unanimously. While allocations under development heads included Rs 81.130 billion for Development, Rs 10.718 billion for Irrigation Works, Rs 354.541 million for Agricultural Improvement and Research, Rs 1.700 billion for Town Development, Rs 45.488 billion for Roads and Bridges, Rs 22.623 billion for Government Buildings and Rs 3.322 billion for Loans to Municipalities/Autonomous Bodies etc. Soon after the approval of the grants, the Finance Minister thanked the treasury and opposition's forward bloc members for their active participation in the budget discussion.
