Re-entry into C’wealth to give new impetus to Pakistan govt: Speaker

ISLAMABAD : Speaker National Assembly Dr Fehmida Mirza said on Wednesday that Pakistan’s re-entry into the Commonwealth was evidence of the trust and confidence of the World Community it has reposed in the new elected government and restoration of true democracy in the country.
While welcoming the Commonwealth decision the Speaker said that it was earnest desire of the world democracies that Pakistan returns to democracy and the sovereignty of Parliament established.
After the February 18 elections the country has returned to democracy and the process was started and transition of power to the elected government has been completed.
The Speaker said that the re-entry of Pakistan into Commonwealth will give new impetus to the newly elected government, strengthening the Parliament and democratic institutions in Pakistan.
She said that during IPU conference at Cape Town,South Africa,she raised the issue of Pakistan entry into Commonwealth with the Parliamentarians of the member countries.She said she had ensured the world leaders that true democracy was restored in Pakistan and the Parliament was completed and sovereign.
She said that the Parliamentarians of the member countries were fully convinced that Pakistan’s membership needed to be restored and this restoration would strengthen democratic process in Pakistan.
Lauding the Commonwealth decision to allow Pakistan’s re-entry,the Speaker said that the step would boot the Pakistan’s new government and will go a long way in strengthening the democratic process in the country.
