Price hike in bollywood

The sun is shining bright on the industry with most stars raising their price; from newcomers like Ranbir Kapoor to seasoned actors like Anil Kapoor and Aishwarya Rai Bachchan are upping their price. We take a look at this phenomenon
EVEN BOLLYWOOD’S self-proclaimed King deserves a raise; post the box-office success of his home-production Shah Rukh Khan has raised his fee to Rs. 45 crore per film apart from all the money he makes from his numerous endorsement deals and his latest acquisition a television show. No wonder the actor managed to buy himself an expensive cricket team.
Running close to Shah Rukh is his arch rival Aamir Khan who has progressed to becoming a director today. Aamir’s directorial debut may have won him a lot of critical acclaim but the actor did expect more performance at the box-office. But this hasn’t stopped the actor from demanding Rs. 40 crores per film. Unlike Shah Rukh, Aamir doesn’t make exceptions on his fee, even YashRaj Films had to bow down and pay the actor his full fee. Giving close competition to the Khan’s is Akshay Kumar, who hasn’t given a single flop since 2005. Akshay who charged between Rs.15 to Rs.18 crore has been offered Rs.41 crore by Venus Films for a Priyadarshan film. In 2008 Akshay will also be seen on television hosting the Indian version of Fear Factor for which he’s being paid Rs 1.5 crore per episode, much more than what Shah Rukh is getting for his TV show.
Newcomer Ranbir Kapoor’s Saawariya may have flopped dismally but he won all the awards and a series of big budget films including YashRaj’s Bachna Ae Haseeno. Recently Raj Kumar Santoshi offered him Rs.4 crore for a film, following which Ranbir is now demanding Rs. 5 crore per film. An ideal case of make hay while the sun shines.
Where does Hrithik Roshan make his moolah from? The actor may have a soft corner for his dad’s films but at the same time he does a Dhoom 2 and a Jodhaa Akbar and charges approximately Rs. 25 crore per film, apart from a numerous big budget endorsement deals. Saif Ali Khan started his career playing second fiddle to Shah Rukh and Aamir but post Parineeta, Hum Tum, Omkara and more recently Race, Saif’s take home salary is on par with Shah Rukh and Aamir at Rs. 40 crore per film, apart from that he too has an impressive list of endorsement deals. In fact, the national award winner actor’s power is such that he recently refused a Rs.30 crore endorsement deal from a major corporate house.
With all the younger actors raising their fee, why should veteran actor Anil Kapoor be left behind. After lying low for a long time Anil’s got a new lease of life with two back to back hits Welcome and Race. The actor has upped his price from Rs. 3.5 crore to Rs. 10 crore. Anil recently bargained with Studio 18 for an Anees Bazmee directed film at Rs. 8 crore. Also after shying away from endorsement deals all this while, Anil is now being approached by corporate houses to promote products along with actress daughter Sonam Kapoor.
It isn’t just the men who are making all the money, even the femme fatales of Bollywood are busy upping their price. While Aishwarya Rai Bachchan is getting Rs. 6 crore per film, Kareena Kapoor and Katrina Kaif are fighting for the second place.
Post the success of Jab We Met Kareena upped her price from Rs. 1.5 crore to Rs. 3 crore and signed a two- film deal with Studio 18 and a three film deal with Ashtavinayak Films at this price. While Kareena was rejoicing as being the highest paid actress in Bollywood, a newbie like Katrina Kaif is now threatening her position.
Namastey London, Partner, Welcome and now Race have put Katrina on the same pedestal as Kareena, at least as far as their market prices go. Katrina is being paid Rs 6 crores for a two-film deal by Studio 18, that’s Rs. 3 crore per film. Furthermore, she’s being paid Rs. 1.5 crore for just an item number in an Ashtavinayak Film making her the most expensive item girl in B-town. Meanwhile, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan who was offered Rs. 4 crore for Shankar’s Robot demanded Rs. 6 crores for the film, the makers gave in to her demands. BM&C
Million dollar babe
THERE'S CONSTANT one-upmanship in Bollywood. If one star gets paid a crore today, the other will rake in two crore tomorrow.
This is especially so among the actresses. Recently, Kareena Kapoor and Katrina Kaif were in the news. Kareena for charging a whopping amount for her films and Katrina for becoming the most expensive item girl in Bollywood at an exorbitant Rs 1.5 crore.
Now the race is hotting up! Diva Mallika Sherawat is not far behind. Sometime ago she made news as the most expensive cameo actress, when she charged Rs 1.5 crore for a 10-minute role in Himesh Reshammiya's Aap Ka Suroor. Now Mallika's back and making even a bigger impact. The actress is being paid a million dollars for an ad. Yes, she is charging Rs 3.5 crores for a CD and cassettes advertisement. It's basically a surrogate commercial film directed by filmmaker Pradeep Sarkar for which the lyrics are apparently written by Gulzar. Million dollar baby Mallika is naturally excited about her latest venture and the big bucks! "It's about time that filmmakers in India stop telling actresses that we look like a million dollars and start paying us that. The way India is growing and the way the US dollar is sinking, it won't be long before a million dollars and a million rupees mean the same thing."
