QUETTA : Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani on Friday announced measures to ensure smooth supply of wheat to Balochistan, with PASSCO directed to immediately arrange 100,000 tonnes of the grain for the province. The Prime Minister also said that the government would use all available resources to trace the missing persons in Balochistan.
In his first interaction with the Balochistan cabinet, the Prime Minister said the government was fully aware to the problems, the province was facing in movement and transportation of wheat.
“Ministry of Food and Agriculture has already set up a Task Force in this regard,” he said, adding that Balochistan has 15 days of wheat stock to meet provincial needs.
“The PASSCO (Pakistan Agriculture Storage and Supply Corporation) has been directed to immediately provide 100,000 tonnes of wheat for the province.”
For further boosting supplies, Prime Minister Gilani said Punjab will provide 50,000 tonnes of wheat to Balochistan and will purchase another 300,000 tonnes for the province.
Balochistan will also have 200,000 tonnes from the wheat being imported by the government for stock and domestic requirements.
On the issue of missing persons, Prime Minister Gilani assured the Balochistan government that all concerned departments would be mobilized to trace the missing persons.
He asked the Adviser to the Prime Minister on Interior, Rehman Malik to take immediate steps in this regard.
Alluding to the energy, wheat and water crises created by the wrong policies of the previous government, the Prime Minister said the government was fully aware of problems and injustices being faced by the people including Balochistan.
He said there was a sense of deprivation among the people in Balochistan and assured that all efforts would be made to undo the wrongs meted out to the province.
“After the mandate given to the PPP and other democratic forces, it is our responsibility to undo the injustices done to the people, especially the people of Balochistan.
The government, he said, would take all steps for the betterment and welfare of the people in Balochistan and to bring them into the national mainstream.
Prime Minister Gilani said the provincial government and the people would be taken into confidence with regard to development projects in the province and the government would ensure availability of funds for the mega projects.
“There will be no hinderance in the provision of funds for the major projects.”
He held out a firm assurance that six percent quota for Balochistan in the federal departments would be strictly followed to ensure rightful share of youth of the province.
In this regard, Prime Minister Gilani said he has directed the cabinet to create more job opportunities and not to disturb the formula.
