QUETTA — The newly-elected members of the Balochistan Assembly took the oath yesterday at the inaugural session of the provincial assembly, and later adopted a resolution demanding an end to the ongoing military operation in the province.
Outgoing speaker Jamal Shah Kakar administered the oath to 62 out of 65 members. MPAs belonging to Muttahida Majlis-e-Amal walked out of the house in protest against the multi-lingual oath taking ceremony and said members of the House should have been administered oath in Urdu only.
In its maiden session, the House offered Fateha for the departed souls of Benazir Bhutto, Nawab Akbar Bugti, Balach Marri and Principal Residential College Loralai Professor Mohammad Ali Kakar. The session was then adjourned and will resume today.
Nawab Aslam Raisani of the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) has appeared as the sole candidate for the office of chief minister having been assured the support of independent candidates, MMA, BNP-A, PML-Q (Ham Khiyal Group) and ANP members for power-sharing and forming a coalition government in the province.
If elected, Raisani will be the third PPP chief minister in the province out of total 13. Former federal minister for frontier regions Sardar Yar Muhammad Rind of the PML-Q is all set to be the only opposition member in the House, a repeat of 1977 when Dr Mir Haji Tareen was the only legislator to sit on opposition benches.
