BEIJING - A Chinese court sentenced a man to death on Tuesday for setting fire to the karaoke bar he worked for which killed 11 people, the official Xinhua news agency said.
The Intermediate People’s Court in Chengde in the northern province of Hebei convicted Jiang Dayong of arson and gave him the death penalty for the November 2007 blaze, Xinhua said.
Jiang meant to damage a computer after being scolded by the karaoke bar’s manager, but 11 colleagues sleeping in the bar suffocated after the blaze went out of control, the court heard, according to Xinhua.
Jiang could still appeal the sentence.
