29 Pakistani prisoners in India to be released this month
KARACHI:At least 29 Pakistani prisoners are expected to be released and repatriated to Pakistan this month from Indian jails, as their nationality has been established and their release agreed by the Indian authorities.
The announcement of the release and repatriation of these Pakistani prisoners from Indian jails is expected during the trip of Indian Foreign Minister Pranab Mukherjee to Pakistan in the end of this month, former Federal Minister Ansar Burney said here Sunday.
Ansar Burney, had visited India recently where he received a list of 169 Pakistani prisoners lodged in Indian jails (including 19 mental patients and 29 women), along with guarantees of their release by the Indian Government on the condition that Ansar Burney Trust would confirm their nationalities and convince the Pakistani High Commission in New Delhi to provide them with travel documents.
The Trust has since released the list through the Pakistani media and located the families of many of these persons to confirm their nationalities and all details were forwarded to the Pakistani Foreign Ministry and Pakistani High Commission in New Delhi.
Pak officials visited the jails where these Pakistanis are lodged and have confirmed the nationalities of almost 29 prisoners in Indian Punjab alone out of 49. With confirmation of their nationalities, the Trust has requested the Pakistani High Commission in New Delhi to prepare travel documents without any further delay for these 29 Pakistanis; so they may be released and repatriated to Pakistan as soon as possible.
Pakistani High Commission in New Delhi was also requested to confirm the nationality of other Pakistani prisoners lodged in Indian jails, including another 20 in Indian Punjab alone whom the Indian authorities were willing to release.
