Govt committed to press freedom: Sherry







ISLAMABAD: Information and Broadcasting Minister Sherry Rehman on Thursday reiterated that the government was committed to freedom of press and said attack on a private television channel is being probed. Speaking in the National Assembly after a walkout by the journalists from the press gallery, she said Seraiki channel ‘Kook’ in Multan was attacked by some persons and one of them has been arrested.
She said on the orders of the Prime Minister an investigation into the incident is being carried out which has revealed that the attack was carried out by private persons.
Sherry assured the house that the rest of the attackers would also be arrested.
About the ban on two programmes of Geo Television, she categorically stated that the government was not involved.
“We are committed to the freedom of press and we have got nothing to do with the forces that have talked to Dubai authorities for a ban,” she stated.
Sherry said the government was ready to offer Geo TV landing rights through Pakistan Television and other technical facilities like landing rights which were now available in the country.
She said that as already stated by her, there will never be a ban or blackout of any programme on any channel by the present government.
