Parliament to be made supreme through constitutional package: Sherry

ISLAMABAD: Minister for Information and Broadcasting, Sherry Rehman Thursday said the government of Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) and its allies would take all political parties into confidence to run affairs of the state.
“Restoration of the constitution of 1973 and the initiation of the agendas of Charter of Democracy (CoD) are not something ordinary, it would be a historic and important step towards a real restoration of democracy in the country,” she said while talking to mediapersons at the Parliament House here.
The Minister reiterated that parliament is the supreme legislative body and all decisions would be made by the parliament which would be empowered through Constitutional package.
The Minister said the proposed constitutional package reflects the spirit of Charter of Democracy signed between Pakistan Peoples Party and Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz leadership in London.
She said consultations on constitutional package with all political parties were going on and after completion of this process the Package would be tabled in the Parliament.
“This package may be tabled in the parliament soon but we will wait for the consultation to be completed”, she added.
Answering a question, Sherry Rehman said that balance must be restored to the legislative arm of the state, which has always been envisioned as a parliamentary system.
“All stakeholders must abide by a democratic process of enabling change through parliament because tolerance of others’ views and presence of conflicting opinions is key to real democracy” she added.
About the meeting between PPP Co-Chairman Asif Ali Zardari and PML-N Quaid Nawaz Sharif, she said the proposed constitutional package also came under discussion.
Replying to another question, the Minister asked the media to play its due role and support the government in strengthening the democratic process.
