Benazir was champion of Pak-India friendship: I K Gujral




NEW DELHI : Former Prime Minister of India I. K Gujral said the late Benazir Bhutto was a champion of Pak-India friendship. He was speaking at a function held here on Saturday to celebrate birth anniversary of Benazir Bhutto, a rare event in India.
The function was organized by Delhi Peace Summit in cooperation with World Punjabi Conference. Fakhar Zaman was the guest in honour from Pakistan on the occasion
I. K Gujral said those personalities who will work for friendship and cooperation between Pakistan and India will rise on the horizon in future. Benazir Bhutto is and will be one of them, he said.
Narrating his long association with Benazir Bhutto, he said we use to meet one or two times in a year in world functions. I found her a sincere lady who wants to develop friendship between Pakistan and India.
The former Indian Prime Minister said he received a letter of greetings from Benazir Bhutto on the day when she was assassinated. The South Asia has lost a great leader, he said.
Fakhar Zaman, Chief of World Punjabi Forum said Shaheed Benazir Bhutto was a mythical personality who had the ability to change the course of history.
In Pakistan, he said the entire politics revolves around the late Zulifkar Ali Bhutto and his daughter Benazir Bhutto.
She was a visionary leader who wanted to wriggle Pakistan out of syndrome of terrorism. She wants to see equality, tolerance and dialogue in Pakistan . She was strong believer in democracy and laid down her life to achieve this goal.
Fakhar Zaman said he will write a play on Bneazir Bhutto which will be played in Delhi.
Afrasiab, Pakistan Deputy High Commissioner said Benazir Bhutto was a great politician and wants friendship between Pakistan and India.
He said when she was assassinated, the Indian leadership including Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, Sonia Gandhi, I. K Gujral, L.K Advani and so many other personalities visited Pakistan High Commission to condole the death of Benazir Bhutto. Pakistan appreciated this gesture.
Noting that future of interaction between both the countries is bright, he said Pakistan wants to develop relationship of trust.
Dr. Amrik Singh, Dr. S.S Noor and other literary figures also paid tributes to Banazir Bhutto on the occasion.
