ISLAMABAD: Senator Mushahid Hussain, Secretary General of Pakistan Muslim League has been elected Vice President for Asia of the Centrist Democrat International (CDI), an international grouping of political parties belonging to the centre.
A meeting of CDI was held in Paris on June 27, which was attended by the Chairman of the CDI, former President of Mexico, Vicente Fox and its President, the speaker of the Italian Parliament, Ferdinando Casini.
Thirty political parties from Asia, Africa and Europe participated in the meeting, where the PML Secretary General, Senator Mushahid Hussain was unanimously elected as Vice President for Asia.
He was also especially invited by the former President of Mexico to attend the next meeting of the CDI Executive Committee which will be held in Mexico in November 2008.
Senator Mushahid Hussain briefed the meeting on developments in Pakistan, specially the smooth, democratic transition in Pakistan after the free and fair elections of February 18, 2008.
He also told the meeting that a new factor in Pakistani politics was the emergence of a strong and assertive middle class which was making its presence felt through the movement for restoration of judiciary in cooperation with the civil society, NGOs and a vibrant and independent media.
He said that these developments had strengthened Pakistan’s democracy and these were uniting factors on issues facing the state and society.
He also briefed the CDI meeting about the PML role saying that it had
emerged as the second largest party of the country with a vote bank of 8 million,
which was political present in the four provinces of Pakistan and the PML is playing its role as the main opposition.
