17 dead in Afghan suicide blast: governor

KABUL - Seventeen people were killed and 25 injured in a suicide bomb attack Thursday in front of a mosque in southwest Afghanistan, a provincial governor said.
"There was a suicide bombing in front of the city's mosque and at this time we know that at least 17 people have been killed," said Ghulam Dastgir Azad, governor of Nimroz province.
"Initial investigations indicate that there might have been more than one bomber."
Two police were among the dead in the evening attack in the city of Zaranj, the provincial capital, while the others were civilians, the governor said.
Thirteen militants were killed elsewhere in Afghanistan, which is witnessing a surge in violence, on Thursday.
Taliban rebels are waging an insurgency to bring down the US-backed government of President Hamid Karzai and oust tens of thousands of foreign troops deployed in the country.
