Gilani for peaceful, just solution of Kashmir

ISLAMABAD : Prime Minister Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani Friday said an early, just and peaceful settlement of the Kashmir dispute in line with the aspirations of Kashmiris would help Pakistan and India to achieve their full potential. Talking to Kuldip Nayar, a veteran Indian journalist, parliamentarian and diplomat, the Prime Minister said his government was committed to improving relations with India so as to usher in an era of peace in the region.
He said relations between the two countries always improved when a civilian government was in place in Pakistan.
The Prime Minister said his government would continue to take more Confidence Building Measures to further improve ties in different fields. People to people contacts will also be increased to achieve the objectives, he added.
He said restoration of the 1973 Constitution in its original form was the government’s top priority, as it wanted the Parliament to be supreme and sovereign.
The constitutional balance as envisaged in the 1973 constitution would be restored, adding he was confident that Pakistan would gradually shape up into a two-party system as was the case before 1998.
The Prime Minister said his government was also committed to the independence of judiciary and reinstatement of judges, for which modalities are being worked out with the coalition partners.
He said these issues would be settled before long as his party was in the forefront of movement of independent judiciary and made many sacrifices for it.
Nayar told the Prime Minister that he was currently visiting Pakistan to attend a seminar in Lahore.
The meeting was attended by senior official of Ministries of Information and Foreign Affairs.
