2 days of clashes kill 81 in Somalia

MOGADISHU, Somalia - Sporadic street fighting between Ethiopian troops and Islamic fighters trying to bring down Somalia's shaky government has killed 81 people in the past two days, the head of a local human rights group said.
The casualties ... were caused by Ethiopians using heavy artillery and tank shells in residential areas of the war-torn capital. We condemn this latest fighting," said Sudan Ali Ahmed, chairman of Elman Human Rights. Besides the 81 dead, 119 people had been wounded, he said.
Elman tracks fatalities through hospitals and morgues.
Sunday's clashes broke out in rubble-strewn streets still littered with the uncollected bodies of the dead from the previous day's violence. Witness Aden Shire said the Ethiopians seemed to be searching for the bodies of fellow soldiers killed the previous day.
Omar Abdulahi, said that among the dead he counted were two old men shot by Ethiopian soldiers inside their homes. Nasteho Moalim said her 7-year-old daughter and three neighbors were killed by tank shells fired by Ethiopian forces that hit their homes. Her husband was wounded. It was not clear these were among the dead reported by other residents of the area.
On the government's side, one Somali soldier and two Ethiopians were killed, said Asha Shegow Abikar, who saw their bodies outokde his house.
Prime minister Nur Hassan Husein addressed the growing toll of civilian casualties during the latest outbreak of fighting.
¢The government is sorry about the fighting and loss of innocent civilian lives," he told a news conference Sunday. ¢Our aim is to restoe law and order through reconciliation and peaceful means, but that does not mean our troops and those of our ally Ethiopia will not defend themselves as they come under constant attack."
Ethiopian troops supporting the transitional government's soldiers come under daily attack from the Islamic fighters they chased from power in the capital in December 2006.
The Islamists receive support from Ethiopia's archenemy, Eritrea.
Impoverished Somalia has not had a functioning government since 1991, when warlords overthrew a dictator then turned on one another.

Pope leaves US after historic trip
NEW YORK - Pope Benedict XVI left the United States on Sunday after a historic visit that included massive outdoor masses and stops at the White House and the site of the attacks of September 11, 2001.
The pope left aboard an Alitalia plane at John F. Kennedy Airport in New York after a departure ceremony attended by US Vice President Dick Cheney.
Last week, Benedict celebrated his 81st birthday at the White House with President George W. Bush.
On Sunday, he visited Ground Zero, the site of the 9/11 attacks that left nearly 3,000 people dead, before celebrating a mass at a packed Yankee Stadium.

Japan, SKorea resume summits after chill
TOKYO - South Korea's new President Lee Myung-Bak on Monday opened talks in Japan, marking a resumption of mutual visits between the neighbouring countries after a long chill.
Lee, on the second leg of his first foreign trip that also took him to the United States, started a summit with Prime Minister Yasuo Fukuda that was expected to focus on North Korea's nuclear drive, Japanese officials said.
Lee's predecessor Roh Moo-Hyun visited Japan in December 2004 under an agreement between the two nations for "shuttle diplomacy" of two summits a year, one in each country.
But Roh cancelled another trip a year later after then Japanese prime minister Junichiro Koizumi visited a controversial war shrine.
Lee, who was born in Japan and has touted a pragmatic approach to foreign policy, is hoping to boost relations with Japan which are often tainted with bitterness over Tokyo's 1910-1945 colonial rule over the Korean peninsula.
The new South Korean leader has also signalled a tougher approach on communist North Korea after a decade of liberal leaders in Seoul who sought reconciliation with Pyongyang.
On North Korea, Lee and Fukuda are expected to agree that Pyongyang must make a "complete and accurate" declaration of its nuclear programmes amid a prolonged standoff in a six-nation disarmament deal, officials said.
The Yomiuri Shimbun has also said that the two leaders will agree to launch an annual trilateral summit with China to tackle regional disputes.
Lee and Fukuda will try as well to break a deadlock in free-trade talks which have been suspended since November 2004 over Seoul's attempt to gain access to Japan's heavily protected agriculture market.
The South Korean and Japanese foreign ministers agreed earlier this month to re-start the free-trade talks.

Former bishop Lugo wins election in Paraguay
ASUNCION, Paraguay - Centre-left candidate Fernando Lugo, a former Roman Catholic bishop, won a historic election on Sunday in Paraguay, according to both exit polls and preliminary official results, and his main rivals conceded defeat.
According to preliminary official results made public by Paraguayan electoral authorities - with about 80 per cent of the vote counted - the centre-left Lugo have more than 40 per cent of the vote, ahead of ruling-party candidate Blanca Ovelar with 31 per cent.
Ovelar's party, the conservative Partido Colorado, has ruled Paraguay for 61 years, including the 35-year dictatorship of Alfredo Stroessner.
Results gave former military coup leader Lino Oviedo, who helped overthrow Stroessner in 1989, 22 per cent of the vote.
Both Ovelar and Oviedo conceded defeat.
'We are here to congratulate the people, and to understand that the way projections are moving forward the result is irreversible,' Ovelar told her compatriots in a televised address.
Exit polls issued by the daily ABC Digital put Lugo at 43 per cent to Ovelar's 37 per cent and Oviedo's 16 per cent.
Lugo spoke to supporters late Sunday but was cautious about claiming victory. He called on his followers to celebrate with moderation, and to avoid events that could cast a shadow over the day's joy.
The electoral commission reported high turnout, which observers had said was likely to favour Lugo.
According to Paraguayan election law, a plurality is enough for the winner of Sunday's election to succeed outgoing President Nicanor Duarte Frutos, with a five-year term.
'Thank you for accompanying us from the start, from that small and humble experience of listening to people. Today we can say that those who are small are also able to win,' Lugo told a crowd in Asuncion.
Later, he told reporters that the election opens 'a new page' in Paraguayan history.
'We are convinced that Paraguay has a right to better horizons. We have felt it in the pain, in the tears of so many mothers, the disenchantment of so many young people and the suffering of so many children,' Lugo said.
His jubilant supporters went into the streets to celebrate his victory, but no violence was reported.
Paraguayans went to the polls without major incidents Sunday amid some reports of fraud.
Election observers in Paraguay have accused the Partido Colorado, which has ruled since 1947, of election fraud in favour of its candidate, Ovelar, national media reported.
Lugo, 56, had led most pre-election surveys.
Polling stations opened at 7 am (1100 GMT) and closed about nine hours later.
Observers from the Organization of American States and the Paraguay section of the non-government organization Transparency said that people not on electoral rolls were allowed to vote, somes ballots were handed out with marks already made for the ruling party, personal IDs were 'bought,' and voters were escorted into voting booths by Colorado supporters.
The opposition and independent observers in the capital Asuncion in recent days had warned of possible fraud by the Partido Colorado.
Some 2.8 million Paraguayans were entitled to vote Sunday. In addition to the presidency, they voted on 45 new senators, 80 provincial legislators, 17 governors and 400 district councillors, as well as Paraguay's representatives in the regional parliament of the South American trade bloc Mercosur.
Voting is compulsory in Paraguay for people aged 18-75.
Paraguay's heavily agricultural economy is a large producer of soya and beef, commodities whose prices have sharply increased in recent years on world markets. The majority of Paraguayans live in poverty.
As neighbouring Argentina and Uruguay have enjoyed economic growth, Paraguay - a country of some 6.8 million people - continued to stagnate, leading many to migrate, particularly to Spain.

Con man swindled 50 elderly women out of jewellery
SINGAPORE - A sweet-talking swindler who conned 50 elderly women into giving him their jewellery has been arrested, news reports said.
The 53-year-old was reported to have collected more than 50,000 Singapore dollars (36,764 US dollars).
He would approach his victims and claim to have been a former neighbour, The Straits Times said. He would then persuade the women to part with their valuables by promising to exchange them for ones of more value.
The women never saw him or their baubles again.
The Singaporean, whose name was not released, was trying the same trick when he was stopped by police.
If convicted of cheating, he could face up to 10 years in prison.

China launches education drive in Lhasa
BEIJING - China's Communist Party has launched a two-month political education campaign in Tibet's restive capital Lhasa to attack pro-independence sentiment and support for the Dalai Lama.
China has blamed the unrest across Tibetan areas on a small "clique" of the Dalai Lama pressing for independence and seeking to upset Beijing's preparations for the 2008 Olympics.
Over a month has passed since monk-led protests against government control gave way to deadly anti-Chinese rioting in Lhasa on March 14, but security forces have wrestled with continued unrest there and across other Tibetan areas, and blamed it on the exiled Tibetan spiritual leader.
In a bid to reinforce control over Lhasa, Party authorities have launched an education drive focused on officials and Party members, the official Tibet Daily reported on Monday.
The campaign to "fight separatism, protect stability and promote development" would focus on "unifying the thinking and cohesive strength of officials and the masses, deepening the struggle against separatism, and counter-attacking the separatist plots of the Dalai clique," said the paper.
Party members and officials would be assessed on their "performance" in the two-month drive, which will include television programmes and organised denunciation sessions.
The Dalai Lama has denounced violence and said he supports Beijing holding the Games in August, but also accused Beijing of perpetrating possible "cultural genocide" in Tibet. China has called him an irrelevant exile.
But a huge paramilitary build-up across Tibetan areas, bans on much travel and tourism there, and now the "mass education" campaign suggest the government itself fears wider sources of discontent, including among officials and Party members.
Over the weekend, Beijing slightly loosened its usually strict ban on protest to allow angry citizens to denounce the Dalai Lama and urge boycotts of businesses accused of supporting him, especially the French supermarket giant Carrefour.
Chinese state-run media have been awash with reports accusing Western media of biased reports of the unrest and of Chinese policy in Tibet.
But in the face of inflamed nationalism, Party authorities are moving to strengthen controls and channel public anger over Tibet protests that dogged the Olympic torch relay in Paris, London and other capitals.
On Monday, the People's Daily, the official paper of the Communist Party, praised the "patriotic" upsurge among citizens but warned them to stay within the law.
"We must have patriotic passion but also the reasonableness of a great power," the paper said.
"Concrete actions to maintain overall stability, encourage economic development, and successfully hold the Olympics are the best response to these actions to contain and castigate China."

Solar-barbecued chicken a hit in Thailand
BANGKOK - Solar energy has found a unique outlet in Thailand, where one innovator is using the sun's rays to roast barbecued chicken at his roadside stall, drawing the attention of Japanese researchers and hungry motorists, news reports said on Monday.
With temperatures and fuel prices rising around the globe, Sila Sutharat's solar-seared chicken, sold at a roadside in Phetchaburi town, 90 kilometres south-west of Bangkok, recently attracted a team of Japanese researchers keen to learn his cooking techniques, the Bangkok Post newspaper reported.
Sila, 50, has devised a concave collection of small mirrors, that reflect the morning sun's rays onto his chickens.
The Thai innovator, who attributed his culinary brainstorm to a childhood experiment with a magnifying glass, said the sun can roast a 1.6-kilogram chicken in 10 minutes for an average of 50 birds each morning, selling at 160 baht (5 dollars) each.
While the solar system saves on fuel, Sila acknowledged that it only works from 7 to 11 am and takes twice as long when the skies are overcast.

N Korea produced 30 kg of plutonium
TOKYO - North Korea told the United States in December it has produced a total of around 30 kg (66 lbs) of plutonium, about 20 kg less than what the United States estimates, a Japanese newspaper reported on Monday.
The daily Tokyo Shimbun reported that North Korea's chief envoy to the talks, Kim Kye-gwan, told his U.S. counterpart, Christopher Hill in North Korea last December the North had used about 18 kg of its plutonium stockpile for nuclear development and around 6 kg for its first and only underground nuclear test in October 2006.
The newspaper, citing a source involved in the six-way talks on North Korea's nuclear programme for the report, did not elaborate on what the remaining 6 kgs was used for.
The United States, which estimates that communist North Korea has produced more than 50 kg (110 lb) of plutonium, has demanded Pyongyang submit a "complete and correct" declaration of its past and present nuclear activities.
North Korea has said it has accounted for its past and current activities as required. But the United States says that the North has not discussed any transfer of nuclear technology to other countries, notably Syria, nor has it accounted for its suspected pursuit of uranium enrichment.
Uranium enrichment could provide North Korea with a second way to produce fissile material for nuclear weapons in addition to the its plutonum-based programme.
Under the second phase of the six-party deal, once North Korea has produced its nuclear declaration, the United States is expected to relieve it of sanctions under the U.S. state sponsors of terrorism list and Trading With the Enemy Act.
In the third phase, North Korea is expected to dismantle its nuclear facilities at Yongbyon and abandon all nuclear weapons in exchange for further economic and diplomatic benefits.
Six-party talks, aimed at curbing North Korea's nuclear ambitions, involve the United States, the two Koreas, China, Japan, and Russia, have stalled pending North Korea's full accounting of nuclear activities.
President George W. Bush and South Korean President Lee Myung-bak, meeting at Camp David at the weekend, warned that even after North Korea makes a full declaration, the information would still have to be verified.
They appeared to back away from a reported proposal under which, according to sources familiar with the matter, Washington would list its concerns about the nuclear programs which Pyongyang would then acknowledge.
Some U.S. conservatives have criticized that idea as giving in to North Korea and aimed at getting a deal before Bush leaves office in early 2009.
A U.S. team will have talks in Pyongyang on Tuesday and Wednesday on how to verify any declaration North Korea may make about its nuclear programmes, the U.S. State Department said last week.

'N.Korea must tell N programmes'
TOKYO - Japan and South Korea agreed on Monday that North Korea needs to swiftly give a full account of its nuclear programmes, Japanese Prime Minister Yasuo Fukuda said.
'On the nuclear issue, we confirmed the need for North Korea to swiftly make a correct and full declaration,' Fukuda told a joint news conference with South Korean President Lee Myung-bak after their meeting in Tokyo.
North Korea, which tested a nuclear device in 2006, failed to meet a Dec. 31 deadline to reveal its nuclear weapons programmes, as stipulated in a deal struck with the United States, China, South Korea, Japan and Russia.

Japan, S Korea agree to harden bilateral ties
TOKYO - Japanese Prime Minister Yasuo Fukuda and South Korean President Lee Myung Bak agreed Monday to strengthen bilateral cooperation on North Korea, economic issues and global warming.
Fukuda and Lee, who arrived in Japan Sunday for a two-day visit, met for the second time since Lee took office in February and were expected to issue a joint statement on a new era of bilateral relations.
At their meeting Monday, the two leaders agreed to resume yearly meetings, which had been suspended since 2005 in the wake of former Japanese prime minister Junichiro Koizumi's visits to the Yasukuni Shrine, which honours Japanese war dead, including convicted World War II war criminals.
Relations between the two countries were strained under Koizumi over a range of issues related to World War II and Japan's occupation of the Korean Peninsula in the first half of the 20th century.
Fukuda and Lee, who first met at Lee's inauguration in Seoul, also agreed to reinforce trilateral ties with the United States to dismantle North Korea's nuclear programmes and tackle environmental issues.
They also plan to establish working groups as they reconfirmed the importance of their economic partnership.

New cabinet lineup unveiled in Taiwan
TAIPEI - Taiwan's incoming Premier Liu Chao-shiuan on Monday unveiled the bulk of his cabinet line-up, with it mostly composed of experienced members of the former Kuomintang government.
"Part of the cabinet has been decided, so we make public the namelist today," Liu told reporters.
Paul Chiu, a former finance minister and now the chairman of EnTie Commercial Bank, was named the upcoming vice premier.
Sixteen other members, among them the economic affairs minister, foreign affairs minister, justice minister and transportation minister, were included in the namelist.
But Liu did not unveil the incoming defence minister and chief of Mainland Affairs Council, the island's top China policy decision-making body.
Ma Ying-jeou of the nationalist party Kuomintang trounced Frank Hsieh of the ruling pro-independence Democratic Progressive Party in a landslide March 22 presidential vote.
Ma's new administration will take office on May 20, succeeding outgoing President Chen Shui-bian who is retiring at the end of his second and final four-year term.

PPP Leader Zadari Says Pakistan Government Not Strong Enough to Oust Musharraf

Asif Ali Zardari, left, greets former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif before a meeting in Islamabad (File)
Pakistan Peoples Party Chairman Asif Zardari says Pakistan's government is not strong enough to oust President Pervez Musharraf.
Zardari says, in an interview with the British Broadcasting Corporation, that the new coalition government does not have the two-thirds majority in parliament necessary to impeach the president.
Zardari adds that a confrontation between Mr. Musharraf and the new government could prolong instability in Pakistan. He says the government has other problems to work on, besides going after Mr. Musharraf.
Zardari has formed a coalition with the political party of former prime minister Nawaz Sharif.
The new government has said it will remove the president's powers to dissolve parliament, and will reinstate top judges fired by Mr. Musharraf under emergency rule last year.
Malavika’s Yes to Kuruvi!

A source from the film unit spills the beans on one of the more catchy numbers from the audio track. The second song of the album Dandana Darna... Kuruviyoda Paattu - is the introduction song of Vijay in the film. And as is the rule in all of Vijay’s intro songs, a hot actress matches steps with him amidst all the cheers from the dancers! This time Dharani and team had chosen Malavika. The girl’s record breaking item songs in recent years was the reason why she was chosen to dance with Vijay. But there was one major hitch – Malavika, who got married a few months ago, had stopped taking on new film as she was pregnant. Still, not one to miss an opportunity to be seen with Ilaya Thalapathi, Malavika gave her utmost co-operation for the song. The steps have been choreographed in a classy way and the song got completed in a huge set in Hyderabad.
A dream comes true

It’s finally happening.Bollywood has put together the dream team of Kareena Kapoor and Aamir Khan for Raj Kumar Hirani’s film Idiots. Kareena, who has signed on three big projects lately, including Sajid Nadiadwala’s Kambakht Ishq with Akshay Kumar and Renzel d’Silva’s untitled film with beau Saif Ali Khan, is thrilled to be working with Aamir. “It’s a dream,” she exclaimed, “we recently came close to working on two films together, Vishal Bhardwaj’s Mr Mehta And Mrs Singh and Mani Ratnam’s Lajjo , but it’s finally happening now. ”She is also looking forward to doing another film with Saif after Omkara and Tashan . “Renzil’s film has a stunning script. And I’m doing something in it I’ve never done before,” she said, declining to elaborate. But she added, “It’s important to keep our personal and professional lives apart. Saif and I need to concentrate on our individual careers. There’s no marriage for me for the next five years.” As for Tashan , she’s worked really hard on the film and is hoping her hard work pays, because “it wouldn’t hurt to have another hit after Jab We Met ”. Right now, she is at peace with herself. She’s looking fab and feeling great. “People are saying I want to be like Victoria Beckham. I think the talk started when Saif got himself tattooed with my name. David Beckham had done the same for Victoria. But I’m proud of my sculpted body. Why should I want to be like anyone else? I look no different from the way I looked earlier. I guess I’m just happy in life, and that shows,” said Kareena.

PPP, MQM failure to reach accord a bad omen
THE much debated and talked about power-sharing deal in Sindh between the Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) and the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) is over at least for the time being.
The MQM has finally decided that it cannot be part of a coalition government and preferred to sit on the opposition benches.
Its decision is seen by many as not a good omen for the country’s commercial hub and main contributor to the national exchequer considering the past record of hostilities between the two parties.
The announcement ended weeks of speculation on the state of PPP-MQM relations and once again raised the spectre of uneasy political uncertainty and possible violence in coming days.
The breakdown in the talks is seen by all political analysts as a major blow to the efforts of PPP Co-chairman Asif Ali Zardari to form a government of national consensus in all the four provinces as well as at the Centre. It also seems that Zardari’s visit to Nine-Zero failed to achieve the objectives.
Apprehensions are not unfounded that the failure to reach an agreement on power-sharing between PPP and MQM could eventually lead to renewal of violence in Karachi and other urban areas of Sindh.
MQM’s decision came after a deadlock in talks and appointment of Dr Shoaib Suddle as provincial police chief as well as other controversial police officers was termed last straw that led to the complete breakdown of talks.
Dr Suddle, no doubt a controversial figure to say the least, has been blamed by many for multiple murders of MQM’s activists carried out by the Sindh police when he was the DIG of Karachi in the mid-1990s, during the second tenure of Benazir Bhutto as prime minister.
Besides MQM, PPP-SB headed by Ghinwa Bhutto, some of the country’s best known lawyers and members of the civil society have also denounced the appointment of the same team of police officials that was allegedly involved in the murder of Mir Murtaza Bhutto. Dr Suddle was one of the accused in the murder of Murtaza Bhutto and six other men. However, reports emanating from PPP sources claim that the main reason behind MQM’s decision to stay out of power-sharing is its demand for certain ministries that was strongly opposed by PPP hawks.
Majority of Sindh PPP leaders are convinced that the MQM is trying to blackmail the PPP by using the Karachi card and that the PPP should resist it at all costs.
MQM, they argued, should only be accommodated on ‘our terms’ as the party does not need MQM’s support to run the province.
MQM on the other hand also questioned the sincerity of PPP in the talks and described its attitude ‘non-serious’, a charge denied by PPP leaders who said the party would re-continue the reconciliation process through the top leadership of two parties.
While both parties have failed to work out a formula to share power, there is still time for saner elements both in the PPP and the MQM to realise the gravity of the situation and try to mend fences leaving aside their differences as millions of residents of this province need a stable government that could provide them basic necessities of life.

PIA fares raised

KARACHI — PIA travellers will have to pay more fare due to an increase in the fuel surcharge owing to soaring oil prices.
The travellers will have to pay $40 more for one-way ticket to USA and Canada under the fuel surcharge head with immediate effect. For European destinations, including Britain the increase is $20 while $10 will be charged for the Middle East, India and Far East countries.
However, no addition has been made on tickets for Umrah. Domestic flyers will have to fork out Rs150 to 300 for one-way tickets.
Meanwhile, private air carrier Airblue has decided to do away with Business Class in all its domestic and international flights to counter the surging oil prices.
Low intensity operation to restore peace in Karachi
ISLAMABAD — The Sindh Police, under its new chief Dr Shoaib Suddle, are putting its act together to launch a ‘low intensity operation’ against terrorists, kidnappers, extortionists and miscreants, officials here said.
Adviser to prime minister on interior Rehman Malik told newsmen here that no direct operation against the Muttahida Qaumi Movement is planned but warned that lawlessness, violence and terrorism would not be tolerated.
He said the government would be able to uncover those involved in the May 12 carnage in Karachi, the October 18 blasts and the assassination of PPP chairperson Benazir Bhutto. All reports on investigations in the assassination have been collected and being reviewed, he added.
The officials said in the beginning the pace of the operation will be quite slow till all intelligence agencies are brought on board and are willing to provide back-up support.
“Without the full intelligence support, no operation will achieve any success in Karachi. There is no point in doing a patchy work because it will encourage terrorists,” The News quoted a senior police official, who was recently transferred to Karachi after 12 years. “Unless the Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) is comprehensively associated with any such operation, we can’t go the whole yard and take the troublemakers head-on. This premier outfit has all the resources and high-tech required for such a drive,” he said.
During his recent visit to Islamabad, the officer showed to The News correspondent a huge bundle of documents, wrapped in a shopping bag, giving graphic details of those who had been resorting to killings and creating anarchy and chaos in Karachi.
The officer has been on the ‘hit list’ of terrorists for his all-inclusive involvement in the previous operation in which several people belonging to the Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) died in fake encounters.
The MQM publicly repudiated the appointment of this police officer as it did in the case of Suddle as the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Sindh. It cited these appointments as one of the reasons for its decision to snap power-sharing negotiations with the PPP and sit in the opposition.
The official said no doubt the terrorists were well armed and had large amount of weapons that they had assembled over the past decade, it was not a big deal to crack down on them if there were complete preparations and clarity of mind as to what was to be achieved.
He said mere moving of Suddle to Sindh as chief of provincial chief and some other changes made at the senior level in the provincial police, especially Karachi, had sent an unambiguous message across the board that illegal activities would have to be ceased forthwith or these would be curbed with force. These changes have instantly resulted in reduction in street crimes, including the snatching of mobile phones, he added.
Another official said that the Karachi Police would now no longer sit silently waiting for all the main players of the government, including intelligence agencies, to come out with their opinion that the troublemakers had to be dealt with severely in Karachi before it was too late.
The first step that Suddle has started taking is to inculcate confidence in the police force and tell them that he means business. The recent pay raise given to policemen and provision of other facilities was part of this policy. While Suddle has the track record of taking on the criminals in a decisive way, he doesn’t spare policemen who show laxity and negligence.

Sherry Rehman vows to ensure freedom of expression

ISLAMABAD : The government believes in freedom of expression and would take all necessary steps to address concerns of the media. Minister for Information and Broadcasting Sherry Rehman said this while talking to newsmen at a reception she hosted here on Sunday for journalists at Peoples Secretariat.
She said the government intends to give maximum freedom to the media and, instead of imposing anything, its criteria would be finalized after consulting all stakeholders.
“Our party respects the journalists community which always supported us in the struggle for democracy. I would also like to host a reception for photojournalists and cameramen to recognize their frontline role in journalism”, the Minister said.
The Information Minister said “If we do not address concerns of the media, it would become very difficult to move forward.”
Sherry Rehman commented that such informal meetings between media representatives and public representatives were very important because the media could guide the government as it always keeps check and balance in the society.
“It does not make any difference whether we are in power or out; basically we are public representatives and like to be among the masses,” she added.
The minister said that mediapersons have always played a responsible role in the society but they still have to be careful and “report complete quotes instead of out of context sentences for making spicy headlines as it was observed in case of PPP co-chairman Asif Ali Zardari’s recent interview.”
To a question about recent violence in Karachi she said that PPP activists had always become main victims of the terrorist activities in the city.
She condemned attacks on former Sindh Chief Minister Arbab Ghulam Rahim and former federal minister Dr Sher Afgan Niazi just before installation of new governments in Sindh and Punjab respectively.
Sherry Rehman said PPP was not in favour of confrontation between the institutions and wanted to carry forward the democratic process with reconciliation.
“Our leader Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto sacrificed her life for democracy and reconciliation in the country; we would follow her foot steps to strengthen the democracy,” she concluded.
