Karachi faces acute wheat, flour shortage

KARACHIAlready reeling under hours of load-shedding, Karachi, the main contributor to country’s exchequer, is now faced with another crisis. This time the 16 million hapless citizens are encountering acute shortages of wheat and flour as their stocks in city’s grain market have exhausted.
Shopkeepers of the city yesterday blamed the shortage to the non-arrival of fresh stocks from up-country for the past three days due to a ban imposed by the Economic Coordination Committee (ECC) of the cabinet on inter-provincial movement of the wheat. Taking into consideration and protest from the Sindh government the ban was lifted on Tuesday night.
City’s needs stand around 6,500 tonnes daily, but due to the ban on its transportation, wheat stocks in the open market have virtually exhausted and the situation could worsen in the next few days
Fresh stocks from Punjab could take several days to reach the city. Besides, the shopkeepers who had limited stocks of the commodity were demanding exorbitant prices to make quick money.
The new government has blamed the previous PML-Q government for the crisis.
