ISLAMABAD : Peoples Lawyers Forum (PLF) will fully support the constitutional package that Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) will table in the parliament after building consensus with the coalition partners. The lawyers of PLF from NWFP and Punjab assured the PPP Co- Chairperson Senator Asif Ali Zardari during a meeting with him that the lawyers’ community will stand fully behind the party in its endeavor to reform the institutions.
Senator Asif Ali Zardari said that PPP had made a commitment with the people of Pakistan that it will work to change the system in the country and it was moving in that direction with full dedication.
Addressing the meeting, he said that the constitutional package that the PPP government is planning to present is aimed at restoring the supremacy of the parliament and introducing a system where executive is answerable to the people of Pakistan through their elected representatives.
He said that PPP not only wants to restore the deposed judges but also wants to introduce comprehensive constitutional reforms so that in future all institutions of the state work in accordance with their roles defined in the constitution.
The PPP Co-Chairman reminded that Shaheed Mohtrama Benazir Bhutto had laid her life for bringing democracy and institutional rule in the country. He stressed that now was the right time for such constitutional package to be introduced and if this opportunity was not taken then it may never come back.
The PLF members said that they were at the forefront of the movement since March 9, 2007 and they were the ones who started the momentum all over the country but they now believed that a constitutional reform package was required to settle such issues once for all. It was decided in the meeting that the completed draft of constitutional package will be presented at the Peoples Lawyers Forum on May 31 and lawyers input will be sought on that.
The participants paid tributes to Shaheed Mohtrama Benazir Bhutto at the meeting.
Those who assisted Senator Zardari in the meeting included Federal Minister for Law Farooq H Naek, Secretary General PPP Jehangir Badar, advocate Khurram Khosa and others.
