Musharraf distributes prizes at President Cup golf




RAWALPINDI : President Pervez Musharraf Sunday announced a grant of Rs. Two million to help in the redevelopment of Rawalpindi Golf Club for holding major national and international competitions.The President made the donation while distributing prizes at the three-day President of Pakistan Cup Golf Championship at RGC - the country’s oldest golf course.
Also present on the occasion were Chief Of Army Staff, General Ashfaq Pervez Kayani, former Chairman Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee, Gen. ® Muhammad Aziz Khan, Chief of General Staff, Lt. Gen. Salahuddin Satti, Managing Director Army Welfare Trust, Lt. Gen. ® Zarrar Azim etc.
President of RGC, Lt. Gen. Muhammad Afzal Muzaffar, presenting the address of welcome, highlighted the redevelopment of the Club and threw light on the President Cup Golf which was incepted in 1959 and is the oldest tournament of the RGC.
President Pervez Musharraf awarded Rs. 5,000 each to the 100-odd employees of RGC besides granting Rs. 100,000 as prize money to the country’s leading amateur golfer Tariq Mehmood who won the gross category of the main event.
Philonthropist Sardar Khan Niazi also gave away Rs. 100,000 to MCPO Tariq Mehmood of Pakistan Navy besides announcing Rs. 100,000 for RGC employees.
President Pervez Musharraf played a round of golf at RGC before distributing prizes. He was in a “flight” with General Kayani and Lt. Gen. Muzaffar.
The President lauded the sponsors of the amateurs-only tournament, Askari Bank. “Unless there is sponsorship, no sport can be promoted”, he remarked.
The title trophy, decided on the basis of net scores, went to Maj. Tahir Janjua who had a three round tally of 205, followed by Lt. Col.® Munir Haider Malik (209) and Maj. Gen. Tariq Saleem Malik (211).
Tariq Mehmood played an excellent last round of seven-under 65 to claim the top prize among the gross scorers with an overall three-day score of 212.
The second and third gross went to Sajid Khan (225) and Khalid Mehmood (227). The events of ladies, veterans, subsidiary, invitees and seniors with the following results in the gross and net categories:--
Ladies Gross:--Tahira Nazir (163), Mehwish Javed (167) and Ami Qim (167). Ladies Net:--Mehak Khan (122), Ghazala Zaidi (139) and Samia Javed (145). Veterans Gross:--Syed Ali Akbar Naqvi (142), Syed Jamshed (45). Veterans Net:--Muhammad Akhtar Khan (36), Abdus Salam Akhter (37). Seniors Gross:--Mumtaz Ahmed Khan (159), Fasih Ali Anwar (159), Nayyar Afzal (160),
