MEXICO CITY - A strong earthquake rattled Mexico City late Sunday, sowing panic and causing some buildings to be evacuated. No injuries or damage was reported, officials said.
The National Seismological Service measured the temblor at 5.6 degrees, with its epicenter in southern Guerrero state, at a depth of 38 kilometers (24 miles).
The US Geological Survey put the eartquake at 5.8 degrees and located its epicenter at about 160 kilometers (100 miles) south of Mexico City, at a depth of 87 kilometers (54 miles).
The temblor struck at 7:06 pm (0006 GMT, Monday) and was felt for about a minute.
"We've got reports of nervous breakdowns in some housing units that were evacuated by their occupants, but there was no damage to report and fortunately there were no injuries," said Mexico City's Civil Protection service chief Elias Moreno.
Mexico state authorities also reported no damage or injuries from the quake.
Civil protection officials from Guerrero state, where the earthquake struck hardest, said there were no injuries reported but did not rule out some damage to buildings, especially in oceanside tourist center Acapulco.
