Berlin City Council approved Benazir Bhutto Avenue, SPD politicians congratulate Shahid Riaz Gondal

Berlin-Lichtenberg City Council has endorsed the resolution for Benazir Bhutto Avenue with a huge majority. Parliamentary leader of Social Democratic Party (SPD) presented the resolution in the City council and asked for support. After the discussion by other parliamentary groups, the Council approved the resolution for Benazir Bhutto Avenue and transferred it to the Cultural Committee. At the same City Council has asked the Berlin provincial Cabinet for its special approval for renaming a road as Benazir Bhutto Avenue.
SPD Politicians Andreas Geisel, Erik Gührs, Dirk Liebe, Fritz Wolff and Ole Kreins congratulated Shahid Riaz Gondal who is President of Pak-German Council for Culture and Democracy and an active member of SPD. Pak-German Council for Culture and Democracy is the initiator of Benazir Bhutto Avenue in Berlin.
Parliamentary groups of Social Democratic Party, Christian Democratic Union, Green Party and the Leftist Party Die Linke have voted for the resolution. More members voted for the resolution than expected.
Berlin Provincial Cabinet will give a special approval because of the Law for renaming streets “Only Governing Mayor and the Provincial Cabinet can provide exemption to the law, they can approve the naming or renaming of street even if five years are not passed since the death of concerned personality”. Provincial Cabinet has already shown interest and willingness to approve Benazir Bhutto Avenue. This exemption to law was only used in 1960s after the death of US President John F. Kennedy.
Cultural committee will analyse costs and effects of renaming the road as Benazir Bhutto Avenue on the businesses, sports complexes and residents living on this road already.
Naming the avenue after the name of Benazir Bhutto would be a tribute to the political leaders, workers, lawyers, journalists and for the people of Pakistan who fought against fanatic elements and the establishment at the same time to restore democracy in Pakistan.
Shahid Riaz thanked all parliamentary groups and Mr. Andreas Geisel, Karin Seidel-Kalmutzky, Erik Gührs, Birgit Monteiro, Dirk Liebe, Ole Kreins, Fritz Wollf and Manfred Becker for their constant support and special efforts for Benazir Bhutto Avenue in Berlin.
