UET Peshawar and Maryland University forge academic linkage
WASHINGTON : The NWFP University of Engineering and Technology, Peshawar and University of Maryland have entered into a new five-year academic linkage under which faculty members from the Pakistani institution would be trained at higher levels.
Both universities will engage in cooperation in the fields of common interest and shall develop joint projects to enhance exchange of scientific knowledge. They will seek to engage in future specific implementing agreements regarding exchange of scholars for seminars and joint research activities.
Under the agreement approximately 30 teachers of UET Peshawar will be trained at MS and PhD levels in UMD during next five years.
On behalf of UET Peshawar, Pakistani Americans Cultural and Educational Society (PACES) will evaluate the financial and academic performance of UET scholars during their studies at UMD.
It will make sure that all UET scholars repatriate to Pakistan after their graduation so that scientific and research capability of UET Peshawar could be enhanced.
The two institutions of higher learning have agreed on exchange of faculty and students for research, teaching and study. They have agreed upon exchange of scholarly publications and other information in areas of interest to both universities subject to later agreements.
Muhammad Sarwar Khan Adviser Finance and Planning, representing the UET, Peshawar signed the agreement. From University of Maryland C.D. Mote, Jr. President UMD, Nariman Farvardin, Senior Vice President and Provost, and Herbert Rabin, Dean, Clark School of Engineering, UMD signed the agreement. Faqir Syed Asif Hussain, Counselor at the Pakistani embassy in Washington also participated.
Dr. Muhammad Munir, President PACES, who negotiated and finalized the agreement, informed the signing ceremony that the Society is working to promote friendly relations between the people of the United States and the people of Pakistan by fostering mutual understanding through education.
Speaking about the linkages which have been established by PACES for UET Peshawar, he said first academic link was established last year with George Washington University, the second linkage with Berkeley, and this is the third link which has been signed today with Maryland University.
The President of University of Maryland highlighted various improvements made in the university since its establishment. He informed the participants that how the university of Maryland struggled hard in early 15 years to become one of the top universities of the United States.
He hoped that the new agreement will open the doors of cooperation in future and will be good experience for both universities.
