No indication mother was accomplice in incest case

AMSTETTEN, Austria - There is no indication so far that the wife of the Austrian man who locked up his daughter for 24 years in a basement was an accomplice to the crime, investigators said Tuesday.
"There's no way that that has been shown or confirmed," chief investigator Franz Polzer told a news conference here.
He was responding to questions by journalists whether Rosemarie Fritzl, 69, could have known that her husband Josef, 73, was holding one of their daughters, Elisabeth, prisoner and sexually abusing her in a cramped cellar beneath the family home for more than two decades.
Seven children were born as result of the sexual abuse, three of whom remained incarcerated with her, never seeing natural daylight or the outside world until their dramatic release at the weekend.
"It would go against all logic that a mother of seven children would help the father of those children to look after seven more children whom he had fathered with his own daughter," Polzer said.
